Storage – some well ordered ideas!

As you may have noticed, we’re very big on storage ideas at Go Modern. And the trickier the space presented to us the more we love it.  There is a great feature in the March 2018 issue of Essential Kitchen Bathroom and Bedroom Magazine about this very thing… featuring a Q&A with … US! So here are a few tips and ideas below based on what we shared with EKBB (although do go out and buy the magazine – it’s always a very good read!).

Getting the right balance between storage and space in a bedroom is crucial. We often find clients need more storage than they have space for so we play around with ideas, trying to incorporate storage wherever we can.  Building wardrobes right up to the ceiling, using storage beds and tall chests of drawers in smaller spaces. We combine this sometimes with decorative hanging shelves or slimmer wall units.  A bridged wardrobe around the head of a bed can also be a great use of space.  The result should always work aesthetically as well as leaving you with plenty of space to move around.

If a client is thinking of a fitted wardrobe system, we start with the doors; hanging door wardrobes have smaller cabinets which can also be divided inside, so if a client has a lot of different storage needs we would normally recommend those. Sliding doors on the other hand have a cleaner look for small spaces but are actually less flexible in terms of their inside storage.

Smaller accessories such as dressing tables are really important.  You can also get creative with a hanging desk with a fold down-top and interior LED lit mirror, or a small wall-hung shelving unit.  Remember to look at the space between wardrobe cabinets too, as this can often accommodate a table as well as shelves, cupboards and a small chest of drawers, with fitted doors to hide things away when they’re not in use.

Our brands are a great and equal measure of aesthetics and practicality.  The days of having to completely sacrifice style to get the best fitted storage are well and truly over.  It’s often more economical to invest in beautiful semi-fitted designer storage than it is to get alternatives.  And there are so many gorgeous designs to choose from – we are seeing everything including textured doors with leather, gloss or matt finises, or a mixture of the two, and lots of unique finishing touches such as statement handles.

Take a look around our site or pop into our Kings Road showroom and have a chat – you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what we can offer.

Our Wardrobes – A Quick Guide

We have an absolutely enormous range of fitted wardrobes, all from Italy. We have six different modern wardrobe collections, because each range has it’s strengths, & is put together in slightly different size increments. So, for example, if you want a sliding door wardrobe with gloss lacquer doors you will have four different ranges to choose from, one of which will be exactly the right size for your space, even though the wardrobe doors of all four will all be very similar. In addition to different sizes each different range has a few ‘stand out’ door designs, which are completely unique to that range, so we have a lot of really fabulous contemporary designs as well as the (best selling) plain ones.

Although we have a huge collection to choose from not all are on our website, but we have dedicated in house designers who can navigate through our different ranges & find the right size & finish for you. They will work with you to decide how you would like your wardrobe fitted out, & can give you a diagram of the layout you decide on. It is usually better to do this in our showroom if you want to see specific colours or finishes, but it is not unknown for customers to buy a wardrobe after ringing & emailing us, as our fitted wardrobes are Italian, all of a very high standard. If you’re choosing white, black or plain mirrored doors it’s more than possible to buy without visiting our showroom, although we don’t install outside Scotland or the M25 (we have not found a furniture fitter that meets our standards – we are very fussy). Our team of expert fitters have years of experience with luxury brands & can make alterations on site to ensure your installation goes smoothly.

Our fitted wardrobes are divided into three sections, hinged door wardrobes, sliding door wardrobes & walk in wardrobes. Each different type has it’s advantages & disadvantages, & we can help you decide which is best for you.

Hinged Door Wardrobes have the largest choice of sizes, & are available in small sizes from 90cm wide up. These doors usually have handles & there is a great choice of textures, handle designs etc. As the cabinets are smaller than sliding door wardrobes they can be the most effective use of space. These are the least expensive & can be installed in corners.

Sliding Door Wardrobes look fantastic in large spaces. Although they don’t have as many choices of sizes we have four different collections, so should be able to provide a close fit. The minimum size is 2 metres & they usually look better in even larger sizes. An advantage of sliding door wardrobes is that the doors don’t open outwards, which means that not as much room is needed in front of them. They don’t fit in corners, although we have a model that does (the only one we have ever seen).

Walk In Wardrobes are such a fantastic idea if you have the room for them. We have four different ranges (more than anyone else in the UK) & our finishes include Canaletto walnut, dark oak, white ash, all white, & lacquer colours, a nice change from the very traditional all wood usually available. Doors are completely optional, & are usually made in clear or smoked glass, which isn’t always what our clients want, so we have a collection that can have beautiful gloss lacquer doors, which are fixed to the ceiling. Usually walk in wardrobes have panels that are fixed to the walls, but one of our ranges has a structure that is free standing, so does not need to be fixed. Three of our collections are also part of home office furniture & wall unit/bookcase ranges so are perfect for spare bedrooms & teenagers bedrooms, where clothing can be hung & stored in style in small spaces & desks, bookcases etc can be integrated with them.

Handbag storage for wardrobes

At last! Someone has realised women have more than one handbag & need somewhere safe to keep them! When I say someone, I mean Italian brand Bimax who are often ahead of the curve when it comes to wardrobes. Borrowing from a concept in kitchen design this unit can be added as another slimline cabinet, or incorporated inside the wardrobe (or both if you have too many bags). Its uber space efficient & uses the full depth of the wardrobe – 60cm & is easy to pull out & push in.

Its just the right size too, with each shelf tall enough & deep enough for most bags (& hats) & as each of the shelves also has a ledge handbags will stay safe, stored upright instead of stacked on top of each other.

Customised Wardrobes, 5 reasons why they are worth every penny

At Go Modern central we have always focused on wardrobes, & are convinced we have a cracking collection, featuring freestanding & fitted wardrobes from Italian brands Bimax, Jesse Furniture, Europeo, Blog, Tempo & SMA Mobili. We even have children’s wardrobes & walk in wardrobes, with an enormous choice of hinged & sliding door wardrobes in different finishes. To top it all off we have several in house wardrobe designers & one of the best teams of wardrobe fitters in the country.

But wardrobes aren’t seen as ‘exciting’ the way a new, cutting edge contemporary armchair is, & are often overlooked in a contemporary home, with people spending their budget on a beautiful dining table or stunning corner sofa. Houses sometimes have built in cupboards with hanging rails so why would you go to all the trouble of ripping perfectly decent cupboards out & putting a swanky new fitted wardrobe in? And if there are no wardrobes there why not just buy a beautiful French armoire or an inexpensive freestanding wardrobe? Here are some of the reasons why you should set aside some money for a lovely new wardrobe (from us, of course!)..

1         You can fit more clothing in them! With all of the options for shelves (which can go anywhere), & the ability to put two hanging rails where there was one, not to mention special storage options unique to Italian fitted wardrobes you will fit a LOT more clothing inside. Potentially you could save yourself from buying a piece of bedroom furniture or free up some space in your bedroom. Our wardrobes are tall too, much taller than a standard wardrobe so you have all that space at the top to store your out of season wardrobe/spare bedding.

2         If you put sliding doors in you can save space in your room. Wardrobe doors that open out into a room need a certain amount of space, both for you, & to open the doors. A new wardrobe can have smooth, easy to use sliding doors which means less space needed & more room left over.

3         They look so good they can be a design feature in themselves. This is one of the big differences between our fitted wardrobes & the ‘High Street’ wardrobes. The wardrobes in our collection are all Italian, & the Italian companies have spent a LOT of time designing doors that are things of beauty in their own right. From special glass to fabulous handles & lovely colours a wardrobe from Go Modern is going to look really good in your bedroom & will never be a compromise of substance over style.

4          You can see whats in them! Cupboards are dark and it can be tricky to see what’s in them. So while its great to ‘rediscover’ long lost items of clothing I’d rather know whats in there from the start. Our wardrobes all have the option to have LED lighting at the top, which combined with the many different types of pull out shelves, baskets & drawers you can have inside mean you will never ‘lose’ an item of clothing..preventing you from buying that exact piece at a later date because you didn’t know you already had it (don’t worry, we have all done it..!)

5          Last but not least they can multitask. We have put fitted wardrobes in laundry rooms, hallways, kitchens & living rooms. Their sheer flexibility, good looks & excellent use of space mean they work anywhere, but did you know you could incorporate a home office or a dressing table inside one? We often see wardrobes that have a middle cupboard empty of clothing, but with a desk/shelving/drawers, or a dressing table/mirror/drawers inside. Or you can build a wardrobe with an open section with the same accessories. If your wardrobe is in the right place in your bedroom they can be a great place to put a TV too..open the doors to watch it & close to hide it away.

And if you move, our ‘fitted’ wardrobes can move with you..& we can help you adjust it for your new home! We love our collection of wardrobes & hope you will too, & an Italian wardrobe is actually very good value. See our collection in our wardrobes section here.

Fitted Bedroom Wardrobes, the perfect answer to clutter

If there is any room in your home that is bound to be messy, its your bedroom. It could be because you do not have enough available time to tidy up or because you have got so many clothes with only a small wardrobe to keep them in. Whatever the reason is for the mess, an untidy bedroom with clothes on every spare surface doesn’t look fantastic, & wastes precious time getting ready too. Fitted bedroom wardrobes can be an elegant solution to the issue of clutter, enabling you to store your clothes, shoes, handbags, ties & more away in an orderly fashion so it can be easily found by you when you want it, leaving the floor clear so you can walk freely on it. The whole appearance of your bedroom can easily be changed with the correct fitted wardrobe, & you can create a calm & restful ambience perfect for getting a good nights sleep.

New Affordable & Stylish Wardrobes From Jesse Furniture

Wardrobes from Jesse furniture are some of our most popular, so the release of 5 new affordable models is very good news indeed.
All 5 have doors with a ‘polimeric’ coating rather than the usual lacquer, glass or wood veneer & come in only five finishes over the whole range (white or Corda gloss, white or Corda matt, & ‘Tree’ in white or Jesses matt lacquers). The doors & cabinets can’t be cut & filler panels aren’t available, so they are not fitted wardrobes, but other than that its business as usual with plenty of size options & full compatibility with all of Jesses internal wardrobe accessories. At a great price! To see our wardrobes click here.

6 ways to decorate a small bedroom

Many bedrooms these days are much smaller than we would like, especially in major cities like London, New York, Tokyo & Paris – & its not likely that this will change at any time in the near future! So, it’s time to get inventive when it comes to modern bedroom furniture, & fortunately with the advent of the internet we have plenty of options.

1. Get a Storage Bed.

These days it is possible to buy a bed with mattress slats that lift up at one end a little like lifting up a car bonnet (using gas lift pistons to lift the heavy mattress up & hold it up). This then opens up the bed base (which also has a sealed bottom so dust can’t get in) & the inside of the base is used for storage of sheets, blankets, clothing, or anything really. As the space is the whole size of the bed that means a LOT of extra storage, at least 150cm x 200cm x 30cm + for a UK king size bed. Storage beds are easy to use as well, & take up no more room than an ordinary bed.

2. Make sure your bedside cabinet has drawers.

Beautiful bedside tables can be elegant, but if you have a small bedroom you will need a bedside cabinet with drawers all the way up, not a lovely table with no storage space in it. Bedside cabinets with two or three drawers are incredibly useful for holding small objects, books, magazines etc.

3. Don’t forget about the walls

Use walls above chests of drawers & beds to put shelves or wall units on. As long as you keep the design of the shelves & wall units consistent with the furniture this will not only look great but give you a place to put books, candles & smaller items. Wall units can be anything from a single box to a magnificent composition incorporating shelves, TV units, drawers & cupboards & although they are usually used in a living room there is no reason why you would not also use them in your bedroom.

4. Swap your bedside lamps for pendant lights.

This will take a little organising but if you are a home owner you can have pendant lights wired in to hang down on each side of your bed to give you light where you might usually have bedside lamps. Not only will this save space on your bedside cabinets it gives your bedroom some added design flair.

5. Consider a customised fitted wardrobe.

While a wardrobe is a very large item a properly planned fitted wardrobe can be like a Tardis, holding not just your clothing but also shoes, bags, ties, belts & jewellery on special fittings like pull out shoe racks as well as spare blankets, books & more. A fitted wardrobe will be tall too, & that extra height means plenty of extra space at the top to keep possessions you don’t otherwise have a home for & don’t use every day.

A good wardrobe (especially an Italian wardrobe) should be meticulously planned, with plenty of pull out drawers, shelves & baskets so you will never again find yourself peering in wondering just where that new top you bought has got to, while making the most of absolutely every inch of the cupboards.

6. Think about using tall chests instead of low chests.

Two tall chests of drawers side by side can look fantastic, but also have quite a lot more storage, especially if you are buying contemporary chests of drawers which can be quite low. A tall chest of drawers can fit nicely in a small gap too, & if you use the top to display flowers, or a bowl, or decorative objects it can enhance the decor.

A small bedroom doesn’t have to mean no where to keep your belongings & clothing as long as you select the best bedroom furniture for making most of the space you do have.
