We Love Wardrobes!

We love wardrobes. Don’t get chatting to us at parties… or if you do be prepared to be there for the long-haul. We specialise in all kinds of beautiful Italian designed and made wardrobes with (we think) the largest collection in the UK.

Which means there are LOTS to choose from:  fitted, freestanding, sliding doors, hinged-doors, walk-in… along with a dizzying number of styles, materials and finishes. In fact if you’re really keen on the full ‘Narnia experience‘ – without the White Witch and hyenas obviously – we could even arrange to install a ‘secret door’ inside the back of one if you like!

Wardrobes – do you know what you’re looking for?

You may already have a good idea of what you’re looking for.  Or, like many of our customers, you’ll have a vague idea but are open to suggestions.  Likewise you possibly have an awkward space you want to use for storage.  But… you’ve already spent more hours than you know you’ll ever get back looking for a solution and are about to throw in the towel.

It can be a daunting process… but only if you let it be!  So the following is our Go Modern mini-guide to choosing the right wardrobe, with lots of information about what’s on offer and what might work best for you.

Fitted wardrobes

Go Modern’s fitted wardrobe collection is designed and made to order in Italy. Simply tell us about your space and we’ll help you choose from the hundreds of wardrobes sizes and options we stock.  The design you choose is then cut to fit and installed by our expert team of wardrobe fitters. If you’ve an awkward corner or a sloping roof let us know, we love that kind of ‘problem’.

To achieve the ‘perfect fitted wardrobe fit’:
    • After establishing precise measurements and choosing your design, our specialist team will book a date for installation
    • The tops and sides of the wardrobe will be cut to size including, if necessary, cut at an angle (for under eaves, sloping roofs, under stairs etc)
    • Our specialist team will also create and fit matching MDF filler panels, if necessary, to fit around the edges of the wardrobe to ensure a seamless look
    • You choose the internal layout and the accessories to suit your personal requirements

Points to bear in mind with fitted wardrobes:
    • Each wardrobe will need back and sides panels
    • Fitted wardrobes can be designed as ‘stand-alone’ (which also means they can be taken with you when you move house)
    • Because we will need a few spare centimetres on the sides and top to install the wardrobe, there will be a small gap which, as mentioned, can be covered with a specially designed matching filler panel

We also have a large selection of both hinged door and sliding door wardrobes.  Customers often ask which of these would be the most suitable for their space. Well, as with most things in life, there are pros and cons with either design.

Hinged-door

Our Hinged door wardrobes come in the largest choice of sizes, starting from just 90cm wide and increasing incrementally.  Wardrobes with hinged doors can be cut to fit angles, corners of rooms, loft rooms, under the eaves or under stairs as mentioned before.

Pop into our Kings Road showroom to see an example of the clever fittings that can be achieved. Many hinged door styles also have stylish handles or handle recesses.  Lots of these details are a design feature in their own right and, again, there’s a great choice of colours, textures and shapes.

Sliding-door

Sliding door wardrobes are perfect for large spaces. There isn’t quite as wide a range to choose from as with our hinged collections, but we’re confident that we can provide a near perfect fit for any space.  As with hinged-door styles, sliding door wardrobes can be fitted with slim matching panels of the same finish to create the perfect fitted wardrobe look.

The minimum size of our sliding door wardrobe is two metres (and in our experience, they look fab in even larger sizes).

An obvious advantage of sliding door wardrobes is that they don’t open outwards.  That means not as much room is needed in front of them. However, and again for obvious reasons, this style of wardrobe won’t normally fit into the corner of a room. BUT we have found one model that does, the Dover sliding door wardrobe, and it’s the only one we’ve ever come across.

A few hinged/sliding door facts – the pros & cons:
Go Modern hinged door wardrobes:
    • Are usually less expensive (than sliding door versions)
    • Come in smaller sizes
    • Need space in front of them to accommodate the doors opening
    • Can be cut to fit around corners, under angled ceilings and stairs
    • Have some fantastic, design-led, handles to choose from (a small point… but finishing touches are important)

Go Modern sliding door wardrobes:
    • Look very impressive in larger spaces
    • Can’t be cut at angles
    • Have a slightly smaller choice of sizes
    • Need less space out front as the doors don’t open outwards
    • Usually have bigger internal cupboard space

Walk-ins

Our Walk-in Wardrobes collection features designs from several Italian manufacturers and includes styles with hard-to-find lacquered sliding doors, and lacquered panels and shelving.

Why a walk-in wardrobe? Well let’s be honest, because who doesn’t covet a walk-in?

Walk-in wardrobes can be installed with or without doors and, if you’re choosing doors they can also be ceiling hung.  If you need any advice in this area, our designers and fitters can talk you through the viability.  They’ll suggest, for example, the composition/style that will work best.  If you’d like they can also arrange a site visit (within the London area).

In our experience, walk-in wardrobes work best in bedrooms where there’s an adjoining room directly off the main bedroom, or with an L-shaped room, or in a spare room not needed as a bedroom. If you don’t have any of these, larger bedrooms can also be fitted with stud walls to create a walk-in area.

Customisable and practical

As well as being luxurious, walk-ins are incredibly practical.  They provide an at-a-glance view of everything you have and if, like us, you can spend what feels like hours looking for a favourite jacket or shirt you KNOW IS SOMEWHERE it’ll change your life.

The many styles we have are also completely customisable; choose pull-out drawers, glass shelves and cabinets, pull-down rails, shoe cupboards and racks, pigeon holes and dividers etc.  All in a wide variety of finishes from matt or gloss lacquers, wood and smoked glass to leather. We can also add practical and stylish LED lighting to the final design.
