The fabulous sofa you can see in our Christmas window is the Marc-U and we’ve had this one covered in a luxuriously rich velvety red fabric as befitting the season.  Standing alongside the Marc-U is the stylish Mogg TRI.BE.CA. floor lamp, designed by Marzia & Leonardo Dainelli, with it’s clever USB dock built into the bottom shelf. This one’s in matt black but it’s also available in white.  And to ward off the winter cold, our eco-friendly bio-ethanol fire from Cocoon is keeping the showroom nice and toasty.

We’ve really enjoyed 2014’s interior trends… indigo blue’s been a popular choice, along with a number of accessories in striking marble finishes.

Porada Ziggy Square coffee table
Porada Ziggy Square coffee table

Porada’s Ziggy Square coffee table, above, designed by Carlo Ballabio has a magnificent marble top with different marble colours to choose from including a brown Emperador dark marble or, as seen here, a white Calacatta marble.

Painted metal too has loomed large, offered in an eye-wateringly different number of colours, allowing you to be daringly outlandish or just keep things elegantly simple.

Bonaldo Kadou coffee/sidetables
Bonaldo Kadou sidetables

The Kadou side table, designed by Ryosuke Fukusada, has a top and legs in painted metal in a total of nine different colours from coral red to ivory.  Copper too has been beautifully incorporated into even the most humble of designs to add a touch of extra luxury, seen here with Mogg’s kitchen stools, Donut.

In the bed department, tall headboards were the order of the day, with edged-stitching and lots of ‘wrap around’ corners providing a gorgeous cocoon-like effect.

Lema Edel bed
Lema Edel bed

Lema’s Edel bed above features one of the many curved headboards we’ve seen but what we especially love about this design is that the whole bed appears to float above the ground. The shape of the Edel headboard is also accentuated with on-trend, piped, ribbed stitching. Superb.

So, what were your favourite design tends this year?

And don’t forget – December 29th-January 23rd – 15% off orders over £1,000 in our winter sale… so take a little virtual tour and start making a wish list: www.gomodern.co.uk.

Happy Christmas and all good wishes for 2015 from everyone at Go Modern.

Bonaldo – fabulous updates for 2015

If you dip into our blog on occasion you’ll know we’re very fond of anything our friends at Bonaldo produce.  This creative Italian company has been in the furniture business since 1936 and we have always championed them right from the beginning of our own business.

We obviously love what they do; their furniture is beautifully made and they’re never afraid to push design boundaries.  The company works with award-winning international designers and if ever you want to spot design tends in the furniture world, Bonaldo is the one to watch, offering colours, shapes and materials that also make you fall in love with them time and time again.

For spring 2015 they’ve just updated their latest collection, using new colours and introducing new finishes and shapes, as well as surprising us with some amazing accessories.  Their popular Hollywood Pouffes have been given a make-over that we think will become a sure-fire box-office hit!

Hollywood Limited Edition Pouffes
Hollywood Limited Edition Pouffes

Designer Gino Carollo has given his Hollywood Pouffes an exotic new look!  Originally offered in plain, bright primary colours or pastel shades, these Limited Edition versions have new covers featuring birds, butterflies and tear-drop motifs and we LOVE them. There’s definitely a touch of Versace about them – bravo Gino, fantastic!

Just when you thought a design couldn’t get any better, the stunning Big Table, by award-winning designer Alain Gilles, is also given a fresh look with tabletops in heat-treated oak and polished natural solid oak, along with new Corten steel legs. Corten steel is a dark, coppery-looking steel which goes beautifully with these new tabletop finishes.  In the picture below the Big Table has been partnered with Bonaldo’s stylish Filly Dining Chairs.

Again from Alain Gilles, new finishes for the Gap dining table with its blade-like legs and elegantly slim rectangular tabletop.  Gilles has created a new version in green painted oak with lacquered green metal legs, alongside a natural solid polished oak design using his favoured Corten steel for the legs.

If bold colour and a show-stopping shape is what you’re after, the April, May, June shelves, appearing like giant silhouette perfume bottles, should do the trick. Gino Carollo’s eye for the unusual, and designs with a strong personality, come into play again here. April, May and June are shelves that could be used anywhere for anything. So clever, so inspiring… and we have a sneaky feeling that the world of shelving has just ‘upped its game’!  Sizzling new colours include turquoise, olive green and and azure blue. Which one’s your favourite?

And for a touch of absolute luxury you’d have to try hard to find something more deserving of that description than the Alfie Basket Alto bed by Mario Lipparani. This new version has a majestic 1.6 metre high headboard with gentle, wrap-around corners and a softly curved base. You can choose a wealth of different fabrics, or supply your own, for the upholstery. The version below is in a stunning indigo blue velvet and it comes in UK King through to US King sizes and there’s also a storage version.

So, form an orderly queue – 2015 looks like its going to be a very exciting year, and this is just for starters.

All about the kids – ciao bella!

Italians, it’s always said, love babies and children, and nothing proves this more than the latest designs from Italian brand Battistella and their Nidi range of children’s furniture. We’re so impressed with their latest original, contemporary designs which combine style, imagination and tons of practical ideas.  There are three collections to choose from based around the themes of art, nature …. and fun!

Nidi Soft Collection
Nidi Soft Collection

The Soft Collection (above) includes this amazingly versatile loft bed, with a matching ladder that can be positioned at the front or side, and the option of fitting a desk below the bed.  There’s even a handy ‘toy organiser’ between the soft padded frame and the mattress.

Or introduce the idea of creating your own art with the Graphic Collection (below)

Nidi Graphic Collection
Nidi Graphic Collection

Designed to encourage the budding Banksys out there, the Graphic collection features white-board surfaces on desks and wardrobes.  They even include the pens along with a handy pen holder (probably not very Banksy that bit – but we think it’s a nice touch) which doubles up as a door handle.  And while artistic skills are being honed, you’ll be pleased to know that the white-boards are completely re-writeable/cleanable with dry-wipe surfaces.

Keeping in touch with nature is also a theme and the Woody Collection (below) features lots of natural finishes, while still allowing for pops of bright colours along with more muted shades for the older crowd.

Nidi Woody Collection

Woody, like the other two ranges is modular, and contains storage beds, with deep under drawers, wardrobes, desks, wall units, shelves – everything in fact to start a children’s room from scratch and create something really stylish and unique.

There’s also tons of accessories too, from rugs and wall stickers to toy boxes, side tables and felt poufs. Makes you want to be 10 again doesn’t it!

Not too early to be thinking about Christmas!!

Yes, we know it’s (mostly) sunny outside and you’re probably (mostly) on holiday… but we thought this might be a good time to start you thinking about CHRISTMAS!  The UK press has been thinking about it for the past month or so and all the Christmas summer press shows have already taken place (this is where journalists & stylists rush around central London in the heat, eating mince pies and thinking unseasonable thoughts, all working on their Christmas issues).

So, on to Christmas furniture.  Do you remember how last year you swore you wouldn’t host another Christmas without the right size dining table?  Well, now’s the time to start looking.  We have some fabulous new tables including a masterpiece of design from Alivar, one of Italy’s top brands.  The Oblique extends from 200cm right up to 280cm without altering its shape and the legs always stay at the end of the table – so there’s no need to play footsie (unless you want to!).

With extra guests, sleeping arrangements can also cause headaches in our experience.  A sofa bed is the answer and we have lots to choose from and there are also lots out there, but if you want something that really doesn’t look like a sofa bed we have just the design. Bonaldo’s Bandy not only doesn’t look like your traditional sofa bed it’s also extremely comfortable. Bonaldo has a wealth of experience in this area and the Bandy has been designed to last, with a sturdy frame and beautifully upholstered with layer upon layer of foam.  It’s also very easy to operate (even after a few Christmas G&T’s): simply pull the back down flat and the seat simultaneously moves forwards.  The Bandy comes with a Go Modern warning however – it’s so comfortable your guests may decide to stay a little longer than Christmas…

And then there are the finishing touches (and where to hang all those extra visitors’ coats). The beautiful Bonaldo Trees are not a brand new design but soooo lovely we have to give them a mention here.  These are a new version of the popular Tree coat stand but with a light inside, so they’ll not only light your hallway prettily but also provide somewhere for people to hang their outdoor gear (& coo over).   Why buy a traditional tree we say?

P.S. Our summer sale is also still on at the moment – 15% off all orders over £1,000 (Quote coupon code: SUMMER).  What’s stopping you & Merry Christmas!

Milan – bringing home all the fun of the fair

The fabulous Salone del Mobile last month, one of the world’s most exciting furniture fairs, attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors through its doors and had some truly amazing new designs on offer.  We spotted so many superb pieces that we can’t wait to show you … so here’s a little taster of just a few of the great designs we spotted from two of our favourite brands.

Bonaldo is always ahead of the design field and never fails to impress us with its inspirational pieces. They also make incredible sofa beds … and what puts them ahead of the game is … that their sofa beds don’t LOOK like sofa beds – that’s the last thing you want in your living room!  The new Bandy sofa bed, designed by Vittorio Prevedello, is no exception. It’s got a great modern-retro look to it along with removable fabric or leather covers, and edged stitching in the same or contrasting colours.  It’s also a cinch to operate with an easy, manual mechanism designed to move the seat forward and simultaneously lower the backrest (because when you’re tired and you want to go to bed you really don’t want to be having a fight with a sofa bed!).

And how about the April, May, June shelves (love the names …although they remind us a little of some great aunts that it was best never to cross…).  And like those great aunts, they’re a bold trio… striking and a little out of the ordinary.  June (below) is in the black , with May in white and April in yellow … but you can choose colours to suit you.. including mint green, anthracite grey and powder pink, in matt painted metal.

We love Alain Gilles work (his Contrast bed is a firm favourite with everyone here). The Tracks table is one of his latest creations – a great extending glass table with a beautifully simple silhouette.  And in case you’re wondering …the name comes from the two, visible parallel steel beams under the glass table top that make-up the extension. It’s fantastic to be able to see the working of the mechanism – really unusual (remember when the Pompidou Centre was built and we all got excited about seeing the energy pipes in different colours on the outside… it’s kind of similar.. and we’re just as excited).

Mogg is one of our newest brands – quirky, highly unusual pieces that we think are destined to become collector’s pieces of the future. We’re all about contemporary design at Go Modern but so much modern design also gives a little nod to tradition, and these beautiful Donut Stools from Mogg have definitely done that. The designer, Alessandra Baldereschi, has used the ancient art of rush weaving to create the seats of her striking new stools.  Reed fibres are extremely hard wearing and very practical (easy to clean) which is certainly why they were used for seating years ago.  The tripod bases are made in metal with a lacquered grey or white finish or in a beautiful copper.

If you know New York at all you’ll understand why designers Mazia & Leonardo Dainelli called their new floor lamps for Mogg Tribeca, because, as they say, they’re always inspired by the city’s energy and magic, along with the feeling that ‘anything is possible’.   And with the Tribeca lamps ‘anything is possible’ as the dynamic duo have added a cleverly concealed USB dock to the bottom shelf of this stylish floor lamp. Love them!

So, there’s a little taste of some of our ‘finds’ from Milan… hope you like them as much as we do!

Mogg – blurring art & design – plus a special introductory offer

Italian design has always pushed the boundaries – across fashion, art, architecture… it whole-heartedly embraces the avant-garde.  Think of the theatricality of Versace, the revolutionary Renaissance architecture of 15th century Florence or the rebellious drama of Caravaggio.

So when we  found brand new Italian furniture and accessories company Mogg, a company representing the best of this Italian tradition, we were more than a little excited!  Mogg (MObilli = furniture & OGGetti = objects) was founded by architect Nicola Galbiati in 2012, and his company works with a range of award-winning designers – many established names in their own fields of art, architecture or furniture design – or as Galbiati puts it “partners of vision – crazy dreamers”.  Their idea is to “limit the boundaries between art and design” and the result – a collection of exciting new furniture and accessories that we think are not only stunning designs for the home, but true investment pieces for tomorrow.

And as an introduction to this amazing brand we’re offering a special 20% discount on ALL Mogg designs up until December 20th.  Just quote MGBG20 when ordering.

The Botero dining table is the sort of brilliant idea that leaves us puzzled as to why no one ever thought of it before (like all the best ideas)! Designed by Alessandro Masurzo, it includes an incredibly useful storage cupboard in the base. Two sizes and three finishes – including one with a beautiful Carrera white marble top.  Bellissimo!

The Ordinary Day (in the woodshed) sideboards by Raphael Charles, must have the most poetic title we’ve ever come across, and we’re so impressed with this design that there will be one on display in our showroom very soon!   This great sideboard, made from solid fir, looks just like a pallet stacked with freshly cut timber, but the clever illusion incorporates a very practical four-drawer sideboard, with a black lacquered interior.

Remember ‘Being John Malkovich’ (one of our favourite films!) ..?  Well the Rooms cabinet (there’s also a sideboard) was the filmic inspiration behind this stand-out design! Created by award-winning designer Diego Grandi it has 50s style door handles on the cupboards, four gorgeous RAL colours, and sits on an American solid ash wood base.  Yes! Yes! Yes! (and that’s our inspiration from another iconic American movie!).

Many more Mogg designs to choose from … but the magical Casetta in Canada four poster bed is a particular favourite…

Casseta in Canada four poster
Mogg Casseta in Canada four poster bed

Designed by Nathan Yong (named Most Promising Young Designer on the International Scene by Interni Magazine in 2011 and then going on to also bag himself a coveted Red Dot Award) the Casetta is made from solid Ash in pure white, with an open-pore finish so that you can still see the beautiful texture of the wood.  A simply beautiful, clean, and geometrically pleasing contemporary version of the original.

We know you’ll love this brand as much as we do.  So take advantage of our special introductory offer, and quote MGBG20 when ordering.  To see the full Mogg collection click here.

Top trends for autumn

It’s the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness – if that isn’t just too romantic (and OK a bit over-used we know – but hey, it’s still lovely!).  There’s quite a nip in the air and the clocks go back in a couple of weeks – definitely time to think about changing a few things for winter.  And, according to some new research from the Sleep Council (spotted via the BBC news site) the average Brit at the moment is getting just six-and-a-half hours’ sleep a night.  As usual, that’s down to a whole host of things but what the researchers could definitely say is: if you can increase your nightly sleep by even a bit (to over seven hours) you’ll be a lot healthier.

So, onto beds, our beds (a good bed has got to make a difference, right?) and Grand Designs Magazine, the November issue, is featuring one of ours big time.  The new Bonaldo Eureka bed gets a fab write up and the GD team also highlight the autumnal mustard and anthracite accessories used alongside the Eureka’s fresh white headboard and base, with its super-sized anthracite grey stitching.  Feeling sleepy anyone?

Grand Designs Magazine, November, & our Eureka bed

Kitchens, Bedrooms and Bathrooms, always sniffs out some amazing new design in their great ‘trend spotting’ Design News pages, and November’s issue is no exception.  They love our new Octa dining table, also from Bonaldo.  And, as they rightly tell you,  if you speak Greek you’ll know that Octa means eight, which is also the number of metal legs supporting this superb table. Looks great doesn’t it!

So, that’s your autumn/winter sleeping and eating sorted – all you need now is a nice, cosy sofa (did we mention our great new sofas…).  Pop in or give us a ring …  we’d love to show you all our latest designs – they’re just too good to keep quiet about!

Working from home…on the up & up

This week we thought we’d take a look at the cultural phenomenon known as ‘working from home’. And our ulterior motive?  Well, contemporary furniture of course – we have some amazing, brand new home-office furniture that we can’t wait to share with you! Like this new desk from Tema, with a handy cupboard on the side as well as a drawer.

Metro Home Office Desk

Lots of us work from home now but does it still have an image problem?  Wasn’t it London’s colourful mayor who once joked: “We all know that it’s basically sitting wondering whether to go down to the fridge to hack off a bit of cheese before checking your emails again.”  Well Boris, no, you’re wrong.  And Virgin entrepreneur Richard Branson, who apparently spends a lot of his time working from his Caribbean island, takes the opposite stand, saying that “remote working is easier and more effective than ever”.  We’re with Richard. Especially if there’s any chance of working from his Caribbean island.

But if we have to work from our actual homes, not our fantasy ones, these fab new glass desks from Tonelli Design might help make working from the spare bedroom a little more palatable..

Most of us now have fast broadband, webcams, smartphones, laptops … and certainly in London and most major cities, getting rid of the daily commute would be a godsend, freeing you up to actually do more work. In the UK at least, it’s on the increase too. According to the CBI, a total of 59% of employers who responded to a survey in 2011 were offering remote working, up from 13% in 2006.   And the pros and cons, all laid out neatly in the Government’s National Careers Service advice page (go on, we know you’re keen to read it!).  But with contemporary technology in place – we think all you’ve got to worry about is the right contemporary furniture.  Which is where we come in! From affordable shelving and desks like the Paris desk below from Tema Home, to custom designed Italian home office solutions by Battistella or Jesse, or just statement desks – we have plenty to choose from. See all of our home office solutions in our dedicated Home Office Furniture section HERE.

Outdoor Rooms – Homes & Gardens

The August issue of Homes & Garden’s (out now) is a special treat this month.  A whole section on ‘Outdoor Rooms’ with lots of superb styling tips from Kate French and Ali Brown.  They talked about multi-functional furniture and upholstered sofas, all designed for outdoor use but looking good enough to house inside.  Sofas layered with colourful cushions, made from all weather fabrics, and woven stools that can double as tables.

And across a double page spread (pgs 70/71)was our very own Manutti Flow sofa in pebble…

H&G jpg double page spread - blog

Doesn’t it look superb?!  Kate and Ali styled the shot using brightly coloured textured cushions, and placed the sofa in front of a terracotta fire pit, surrounding it with red textured stools.  Stunning!

One of our best selling brands, Belgian company Manutti specialise in exceptional contemporary outdoor furniture that looks like great quality indoor furniture. Fully covered in Nautic fabric, with special quick dry outdoor foam the Flow range has been a runaway success, but Manutti make several other fully upholstered outdoor sofa/chair collections too.

And our Japan planters got a look in on their Lifestyle news page. Trend Watch with ‘Lace Planters’: ‘designers are now transforming ever day products such as the humble garden planter into magical objects of delicate beauty’.  Well, we couldn’t agree more!

Bonaldo Big Table strikes again!

We’ve always been very press friendly at Go Modern.  Our showroom isn’t huge but we have a number of stand-out pieces from our top manufacturers, along with fabric samples, wood, glass, lacquers and weaves if it’s garden furniture.   So, when the team at House & Garden asked if they could borrow our Big Table from Bonaldo for a shoot we were happy to oblige.  The Big Table by ultra talented designer Alain Gilles is a favourite, so we’re always ready to do a little showing off with it!  This one is in canaletto walnut with striking coral red, orange, green and lilac lacquered metal legs – a real show-stopper.  And the talented styling team at House & Garden included it in their great July feature ‘Block works’, using abstract prints and primary colours , mixing mid-century design with contemporary.  It looks terrific – what do you think?

Bonaldo Big Table

Big Table gets around – it also made an appearance in a beautifully styled piece in April’s Living-etc.  This time the focus was bold, bright and beautiful, taking influence from patterns and hand-crafted treasures, and the styling team created a modern masterpiece (with Big Table’s help of course!).

Living-etc - Bonaldo Big Table

Pop in and see Big Table for yourself – there aren’t may tables that can say they’ve achieved ‘celebrabrity status’!

But BT is not the only piece to have been stealing the limelight.  Our pretty Dentelle ‘lace’ parasol (it looks like lace but it’s actually tough outdoor fabric) from Belgium designers Sywawa was chosen by the Sunday Time’s Style magazine as one of its favouritesin their aptly named ‘shady business’ feature.  Great choice guys!

And July’s Grand Designs opted for our Manutti Mushroom Parasol in their ‘shady business’ feature.  They loved the wind-up mechanism, tilting pole, contrasting spokes and fantastic weatherproof fabric… Yay…so do we…that’s why we chose it!

So, pop in, give us a ring… look out for us in the press … come and meet a few celebrities!
