Point + 100 Years of Design Excellence

Point’s Paralel Outdoor dining Collection

One hundred years of history and four generations of the same family have seen Spanish manufacturer Point evolve from a small workshop specialising in woven furniture to an award-winning international brand with a world-class reputation for outdoor furniture.

In their one hundred years the company has lived through the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, closely followed by a World War, and weathered various turbulent economies. During these challenges they tell us that their emphasis was, and always will be, to remain working together as a family.  The Point family? Their master craftsmen, designers, seamstresses, administrative staff, customers and collaborators…an enviable family.

Currently Point’s factories are still operating, although under strict Government health guidelines, and to safe-distance shift patterns. We salute their strength and courage.

Where it all began

José Pons Pedro, the grandfather of Point’s current owners, opened his first workshop in 1920, in Alicante, Spain. Grandfather Pons was a self-made innovator who specialised in the art of wicker, a skill that he had learned in Argentina. His small artisan workshop proved so successful it eventually grew into a factory, and by the 1950s the company had also begun to export its furniture. Over the following decades Point continued to build an enviable reputation for high-quality, design-led rattan furniture.

A focus on the great outdoors

Fast forward to the 1990s and Point’s focus turned to the development and innovation of outdoor furniture. Restrictions however on the export of raw materials, specifically rattan from South East Asia, meant that the company had to find a viable alternative.

The result of Point’s research into a viable replacement? The creation of a brand new material, Shintotex®.  This synthetic fibre was found to have all of the advantages of natural fibre but none of its drawbacks for outdoor furniture. This new ‘all-weather wicker’ fibre now plays a leading role in much of Point’s production.

Design collaborations

From it’s humble beginnings, Point is now one of the world’s leading suppliers of high-end, weather-proof outdoor furniture. Alongside a talented in-house design team the company also works with an extensive list of leading designers from around the world; top design names who bring a wealth of their own technical knowledge.  World experts in raw materials suitable for outdoor design, these prestigious designers work alongside Point to create the very latest in time-resistant, all-weather materials.

Point and the environment

Sustainability and a focus on creating outdoor furniture that will last a life-time is one of Point’s priorities.  ‘Buy once and buy well’ is a philosophy that we strongly share and endorse at Go Modern.

By investing in high-quality weather-proof, designs, the need to regularly replace our outdoor furniture is obviously vastly reduced.  This in turn reduces the impact on the environment from other damaging influences and, of course, what eventually ends up in landfill.

Point’s production headquarters in Jalón are also impressive. By using solar panels they generate four-times more energy than their factory consumes.  The Point team also ensures that all waste materials find a second life, recycling 100% of the cardboard, plastic and foam they use.

Natural materials

Point just loves natural materials. They use only sustainable A-grade teak for their designs, sourced from controlled logging. Which also means that a new tree is planted for each one that is felled. And we’re delighted to tell you that they’ve done this since 2008.

The company’s passion for teak and natural materials is admirably demonstrated in one of their very latest outdoor collections, the beautifully stylish Paralel, designed by Gabriel Teixidó.

Paralel Outdoor Dining Collection

We have fallen head over heels for this new range. Paralel seamlessly combines wood and hand-woven synthetic rope in this elegant collection, which includes chairs, armchairs, sofas and tables. It perfectly embodies the serene and timeless look we love alongside a great laid back vibe.

Importantly, the new Paralel collection is also extremely comfortable.

As with all of Point’s designs, of course, it’s highly weather resistant and very easy to maintain and keep clean. Plus every single part of Paralel is recyclable. We’re very happy to say that it really ticks all of our boxes, and we know that you will love it too.

A splash of colour

Point is also not afraid to throw in a few zingy colours now and then.  Check out their latest footstools – the wonderful Fup by designer Francesc Rifé.  Built on sturdy teak bases topped with a great choice of weather-proof fabrics in an array of colours from neutrals to brights. Simply beautifully sunny designs to help us make the most of our incredible outdoor spaces.

And Point’s other latest news: last year they proudly received a highly prestigious 2019 National Design Award!

So many congratulations to Point on this and of course their fantastic one hundredth anniversary! We look forward to the next one hundred years and many, many more of their innovative and stylish outdoor designs.
