Outdoor furniture spring/summer 2016 from Tribù

Nearly March and the weather IS slowly improving – there’s the odd chink of blue sky and the temperature’s heading in the right direction… not quite fast enough for those of us in the office who had been contemplating fingerless gloves… but in the meantime we’ve been drooling over some pretty cool new outdoor furniture designs from Tribù.

Tribù is an award-winning Belgian brand, although we’re hazarding a guess that their latest designs weren’t actually shot in Belgium but slightly further south – azure blue pools and verdant olive trees are not, as far as we know, a natural Poirot backdrop.

Belgium has pretty much the same weather as we do, so Tribù knows what it’s doing when it comes to designing outdoor furniture that’s completely weatherproof.  Their uber contemporary design will withstand anything the outer edges of the Northern hemisphere decides to throw at it – and given our average British summer who knows what that might be.

If you’re keen to get in on the ‘bring the indoors out’ trend (and who isn’t…)  and create that coveted extra garden room/extension to the house, then this is the answer.

Tribù’s fabrics are all extremely hard wearing and waterproof, and resistant to all those pesky outdoor weather hazards: mildew, rot, UV fading etc. Frames are also built with clever, hidden ‘water channels’ (a clever Poirot touch, n’est-ce pas?) and coated with special extra resilient finishes.

The other winning feature as far as we’re concerned is that all of Tribù’s designs look as though they could happily sit in the most stylish of sitting rooms.  Sleek, contemporary shapes, soft-to-the-touch fabric and clever finishing touches like the Ile side tables and Nomad poufs you can see in the picture above.

Tribu Vis à Vis garden dining table

Planning a little alfresco dining?  Tribù’s Vis à Vis dining table, above, is designed by the renowned Piergiorgio Cazzaniga and we guarantee it will induce serious table envy amongst friends.

Rather than one large table top it’s cleverly made using individual square-shaped slats (perfect for water drainage) which can then be locked together to form 99cm x 99cm sections to create whatever size table you need – even as large as a whopping seven metres long.  We’ll be looking out for our invitation to that party!  It’s also made from beautiful East Java sustainable teak, so it ticks all our environmentally-friendly boxes, and it’s hand-picked to ensure the best quality.

There’s just one thing missing from the picture of the Contour garden club chairs – it’s crying out for that glass of crisp, cold white wine at the end of a lovely summer’s day. Or is that just us?

Luxuriously comfortable armchairs with lots of space to sit back and relax.  The woven backrests are incredibly supportive and made from plaited Tricord, a totally weatherproof material, which means that, as with all of Tribù’s furniture, you don’t constantly have to have one eye on the weather forecast.  They’re happy to sit on the terrace doing their own thing all year round.  Bit like most of us really.  And there’s some beautiful soothing colours to choose from like linen and wenge and you can also include the optional back cushions.

This is probably our favourite shot… no idea where it was taken (if you’re keen to know, let us know and we’ll have a word for you).  What’s not to like?  Shimmering blue skies, sparkling blue sea, a little heat haze – oh, and the striking Neutra chairs. Looks like something from a Warhol picture doesn’t it.

Tribù describes Neutra as having ‘elegance and simplicity’ and we love the triangular profile designer Vincent Van Duysen has created. They’re die-cast using an extremely high-pressure technique which results in a seamless, weldless frame that gives the illusion of an extra thin line totally belying how comfortable they really are.

We want to say “roll on summer” but of course we don’t have to!

Bonaldo – fabulous updates for 2015

If you dip into our blog on occasion you’ll know we’re very fond of anything our friends at Bonaldo produce.  This creative Italian company has been in the furniture business since 1936 and we have always championed them right from the beginning of our own business.

We obviously love what they do; their furniture is beautifully made and they’re never afraid to push design boundaries.  The company works with award-winning international designers and if ever you want to spot design tends in the furniture world, Bonaldo is the one to watch, offering colours, shapes and materials that also make you fall in love with them time and time again.

For spring 2015 they’ve just updated their latest collection, using new colours and introducing new finishes and shapes, as well as surprising us with some amazing accessories.  Their popular Hollywood Pouffes have been given a make-over that we think will become a sure-fire box-office hit!

Designer Gino Carollo has given his Hollywood Pouffes an exotic new look!  Originally offered in plain, bright primary colours or pastel shades, these Limited Edition versions have new covers featuring birds, butterflies and tear-drop motifs and we LOVE them. There’s definitely a touch of Versace about them – bravo Gino, fantastic!

Just when you thought a design couldn’t get any better, the stunning Big Table, by award-winning designer Alain Gilles, is also given a fresh look with tabletops in heat-treated oak and polished natural solid oak, along with new Corten steel legs. Corten steel is a dark, coppery-looking steel which goes beautifully with these new tabletop finishes.  In the picture below the Big Table has been partnered with Bonaldo’s stylish Filly Dining Chairs.

Again from Alain Gilles, new finishes for the Gap dining table with its blade-like legs and elegantly slim rectangular tabletop.  Gilles has created a new version in green painted oak with lacquered green metal legs, alongside a natural solid polished oak design using his favoured Corten steel for the legs.

If bold colour and a show-stopping shape is what you’re after, the April, May, June shelves, appearing like giant silhouette perfume bottles, should do the trick. Gino Carollo’s eye for the unusual, and designs with a strong personality, come into play again here. April, May and June are shelves that could be used anywhere for anything. So clever, so inspiring… and we have a sneaky feeling that the world of shelving has just ‘upped its game’!  Sizzling new colours include turquoise, olive green and and azure blue. Which one’s your favourite?

And for a touch of absolute luxury you’d have to try hard to find something more deserving of that description than the Alfie Basket Alto bed by Mario Lipparani. This new version has a majestic 1.6 metre high headboard with gentle, wrap-around corners and a softly curved base. You can choose a wealth of different fabrics, or supply your own, for the upholstery. The version below is in a stunning indigo blue velvet and it comes in UK King through to US King sizes and there’s also a storage version.

So, form an orderly queue – 2015 looks like its going to be a very exciting year, and this is just for starters.

The Hedgehog Street Garden wins Gold!

A quick update on The Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and the Hedgehog Street Garden…. it won a Gold Award in the Summer Garden Awards category!!!  So, many congratulations to Tracy Foster and her incredible design skills – doesn’t it look stunning.

Pop along to the show if you have time, it opened today, 8th July and it’s on until the 13th. Tracy and the team will be on hand to tell you how they created the look – you’ll be able to see our Bubble garden chairs in all their glory and find out how to make your garden more wildlife friendly.

Go Modern, The Hampton Court Palace Flower Show… and hedgehogs

We love a good flower show at Go Modern – we’re lucky enough to be just up the road from The Chelsea Flower Show (which we also exhibited at one year) and this year we’re involved with The RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

Award-winning garden designer Tracy Foster got in touch to say that she was creating a hedgehog-inspired summer garden for the Peoples’ Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) to show at Hampton.  Hedgehog Street is the name of the garden and the idea is to showcase a number of hedgehog-friendly features to encourage gardeners  to make the land on their doorsteps more hedgehog friendly.

Once we’d stopped Simon from doing a fairly good impression of the ‘Not The Nine O’Clock News’ ‘I Like Truckin’ song (you probably have to be over 30 to know this!) and looked at the garden plan and Tracy’s ideas – we realised it was an incredibly good idea… and a beautiful garden.

So, how does Go Modern come into this we hear you ask?  Well, Tracy had the inspired idea of using a couple of our garden chairs as part of the design (you can see them in the sketch above). Our Bubble garden chairs, she thought, looked incredibly like large hedgehogs (without the prickles of course!) and once she’d pointed it out we had to agree!

The Bubble chairs are some of our most popular garden chairs, made from synthetic rattan, all-weather material, and designed to sit in your garden all year round.  They’re virtually indestructible (unlike the poor hedgehog), cool in the heat, dirt-repellent, fade-proof, water and frost resistant, biodegradable and recyclable.

Tracy borrowed our ‘toasty’ coloured ones which looked a bit more realistic than the white ones above.

We haven’t got any images of the finished garden yet (the show’s open from 8-13th July) but we’ll share them with you when we do.

Of her garden design, Tracy says:”It has been an enjoyable challenge designing a multi-purpose space to inspire gardeners but also help hedgehogs. I was alarmed to discover that hedgehog populations are facing serious problems in our gardens, particularly in moving between garden boundaries to find food and mates. This design will demonstrate that practical access routes for hedgehogs need not come at the expense of aesthetic style.”

So, pop along to the show if you’ve got time, it’s always a lovely day out, and pick up a few tips from Tracy and Hedgehog Street to keep our Mrs Tiggy-Winkles going.
