So it’s Valentines Day! Yes we know it’s all a big marketing ploy to get us to buy flowers, cards and chocolates. But with the spirit of Cupid upon us we thought we’d shower a whole lot of love on one of our best selling sofas. It’s the one you all love – and so do we. Drum roll…. say a big hello, if you haven’t already, to Saba Italia’s New York Sofa.
Our New York Sofa has been loved by a lot of people. It’s also graced the pages of esteemed titles such as Elle Decoration, Homes & Gardens… and The Times once took a fancy to it too. The renowned reviews website Expert Reviews described it as “a sofa to fall in love with“. In the past we have worried that all this adoration might go to its head. But the honeymoon period for the New York just seems to go on and on.
Why is everyone so passionate about the New York?
Well if the New York was on a dating site, and friends had to describe it in four words, we think those would be: stylish, sumptuous, minimalist, and ridiculously comfortable. OK – that’s five. And if we had to give it a hashtag? How about: #SabaNewYorkGorgeous
Brief biog
The New York was designed by Sergio Bicego, an independent Italian designer who has worked with Saba Italia since 1993. Sergio has huge experience in the design and manufacture of furniture. And as you can see, it shows.
Saba describes the New York sofa as “retaining a contemporary soul with a timeless spirit”. Its year of manufacture was 2015. So its been around long enough for us to know how reliable it is. And there have never been any complaints. In fact we’ve received cards and compliments from happy partners. No chocolates yet – but there’s still time.
What sets the New York Sofa apart?
Where do we start? Its deep quilted cushions hint at a retro elegance, a little nostalgia even, while its svelte silhouette gives it a modern, metropolitan allure. These enviable attributes are heightened by its hexagonal shape, and a sturdy frame which rests on slim, steel rod feet.
Will it be unique to you?
We know you’ll want to be in a unique relationship with the New York. Everyone does. And you definitely can be. As with most of our furniture there’s the option of customising. In fact the New York loves that extra attention. Feet, for example, can be chosen in black chrome, gloss chrome, lacquered white, black nickel, bronze copper, bronze brass or satin brass. Phew. As for fabrics, well you’re spoilt for choice. There are plenty of stunning materials to choose from, including velvets and leathers. We’ve also said goodbye to a fair number of New York sofas who were proudly wearing the customer’s own fabric.
In fact back in 2018, Italian fashion designer Antonio Marras had a year long affair with the New York sofa. So in love was he that he designed two specially created fabrics for it, both taken from his autumn/winter 2018 pre-collection.
The Marras fabric above is called ‘Catch Me’, depicting an historical hunting scene. The other, below, is entitled ‘Autumn’ – a fantasy in dark greens and moody blues. For those of you with a practical disposition, you’ll be pleased to know that the New York’s covers are also removable for dry-cleaning.
A softer side
Just when you thought you’d got to know everything there was to know about the New York… you’ll discover there’s also a ‘soft side’ to this design. And it’s actually called the New York Soft Sofa.
The New York Soft shares the same lithe silhouette and hexagonal frame plus slender curved steel feet. What sets it apart from the other New York designs are the back cushions which, when you want to, can be quickly changed from backrests to headrests, by simply rotating. Perfect for date nights.
Allow yourself to be cornered
You can also allow yourself to feel cornered by the New York. In a nice way of course.
As a modular design, the New York has six different modules to choose from. And all of these can be combined in a variety of configurations. You name it – the New York corner sofa will be happy to oblige.
The New York seen above has been configured with a ‘side unit’ alongside a comfy chaise longue.
The Soft version has also got in on the corner act. We describe this one as “perfect for larger sitting rooms, dens or games rooms”. But where your ‘dates’ take place is obviously entirely up to you. The New York Soft Corner Sofa is available in three different sizes and you can choose a left or right-handed chaise.
