The VU 90 mirror by Giovanni Tommaso Garattoni for Tonelli Design, Italy, is not a mirror in the usual sense, as it is actually made of extra clear glass strips of different thicknesses welded together on a mirror back.
Each finished mirror is made up of 30cm wide panels, & as well as the VU panels shown here it is possible to have 30cm wide panels of 'standard' mirror interspersed in any combination.
The VU 90 in the photo is 90cm wide & consists of 3 panels, but it can be any size you want, starting with just a single panel. There is also a larger VU 200 mirror, with 200cm high panels (a separate product).
Originally designed to commemorate 25 years of business for Tonelli Design, & presented at the 2013 Salone Mobili, Milan, each panel has 22 glass strips, which are positioned by hand on to the mirror, glued together and then UV-welded. The panels are then bonded on to a black, matt lacquered wooden back.
