The Porta Volta low chair by Herzog & de Meuron marks a new chapter of collaboration between the historic brand Molteni&C and the renowned international architectural firm, long-term partners of the Molteni Group. This unique chair, resulting from unparalleled attention to detail and exceptional materials will be a sophisticated addition to any room.
Designer Herzog & de Meuron says of his creation; “I wanted to design a chair with an armrest because there are hardly any that I like. I wanted it to be comfortable, welcoming and commodious. Like a room to sit down in – rather than just sitting down on something.”
This low chair is the ideal height for use at a low level lounge dining table, or it can be placed next to a sofa or armchair allowing for comfortable conversation. It has a deep upholstered seat and a solid wood back. The floating backrest extends around the perimeter of the seat in a U-shape, extending forward to create the armrests, and resting on 3 intersecting wooden U-frames that feature a special curved bent “finger joint” detail at their rounded corners.
The legs and the support for the back are angled slightly outwards, to give a sense of stability and generosity while adding extra comfort. Available in high-quality solid American walnut, or solid ash stained in either eucalyptus, black oak, sunrise oak or graphite oak. The thick padded seat, carefully rendered for the utmost comfort, is available in a wide range of fabrics, leathers as well as a Mohair velvet, an exclusive fabric collection composed of 4 custom-made colours.
One of the standout features of Porta Volta is the optional padding on the backrest, a rectangular-shaped cushion that attaches onto the wooden beam which is also available in a range of fabrics and leathers, allowing the chair to be customised to suit a multitude of interior concepts.
