Storage – some well ordered ideas!

As you may have noticed, we’re very big on storage ideas at Go Modern. And the trickier the space presented to us the more we love it.  There is a great feature in the March 2018 issue of Essential Kitchen Bathroom and Bedroom Magazine about this very thing… featuring a Q&A with … US! So here are a few tips and ideas below based on what we shared with EKBB (although do go out and buy the magazine – it’s always a very good read!).

Getting the right balance between storage and space in a bedroom is crucial. We often find clients need more storage than they have space for so we play around with ideas, trying to incorporate storage wherever we can.  Building wardrobes right up to the ceiling, using storage beds and tall chests of drawers in smaller spaces. We combine this sometimes with decorative hanging shelves or slimmer wall units.  A bridged wardrobe around the head of a bed can also be a great use of space.  The result should always work aesthetically as well as leaving you with plenty of space to move around.

If a client is thinking of a fitted wardrobe system, we start with the doors; hanging door wardrobes have smaller cabinets which can also be divided inside, so if a client has a lot of different storage needs we would normally recommend those. Sliding doors on the other hand have a cleaner look for small spaces but are actually less flexible in terms of their inside storage.

Smaller accessories such as dressing tables are really important.  You can also get creative with a hanging desk with a fold down-top and interior LED lit mirror, or a small wall-hung shelving unit.  Remember to look at the space between wardrobe cabinets too, as this can often accommodate a table as well as shelves, cupboards and a small chest of drawers, with fitted doors to hide things away when they’re not in use.

Our brands are a great and equal measure of aesthetics and practicality.  The days of having to completely sacrifice style to get the best fitted storage are well and truly over.  It’s often more economical to invest in beautiful semi-fitted designer storage than it is to get alternatives.  And there are so many gorgeous designs to choose from – we are seeing everything including textured doors with leather, gloss or matt finises, or a mixture of the two, and lots of unique finishing touches such as statement handles.

Take a look around our site or pop into our Kings Road showroom and have a chat – you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what we can offer.

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR OUR SPACE-HUNGRY LIVES

There’s something about the post Christmas period and start of a New Year that prompts, in most of us at least (quick straw poll of the Go Modern team), a desperate feeling of needing more space. Or at least a big declutter. Or maybe we should have just got out more over the holiday!

The great thing is that there’s no need to compromise on style to achieve more space. Lots of the brands we work with have used their creative energy to come up with some very clever and stylish products that will maximise your existing space and give you the cool, sleek, uncluttered look you dream of.

To kick-start your search we’ve pulled together just a few ideas that might help…

Mogg DPI wall units
Mogg DPI wall units

Quirky Italian brand Mogg creates lots of great furniture that makes us think differently about conventional design. These fab wall units (above), called DPI, have a slightly industrial look, which we love, and they’re modular/varying sizes.  The styling here shows them used very creatively as a wall hung bedside table and book storage.

And talking of books, we’ve got tons of them (even more since Christmas!).  Like good friends you never want to part with… kind of.  But what to do with them all if you don’t operate the ‘one in/one out’ system?  Novamobili are the people to ask – specialising in wall units (and some great wardrobes) that ooze Italian style.  The Wall Unit/Bookcase 08 (above) has a very ordered, contemporary look with bookshelves split into individual compartments to help with the sorting, along with sleek, complementing drawers. Plus…all your TV cables, DVD systems, audio equipment, the whole lot, can be hidden away neatly in specially created channels and behind panels, so the dreadful electronic spaghetti cable mess need never haunt you again.

Here’s another smaller version of the Wall Unit/Bookcase above, showing just how versatile this great system is.

And dont under-estimate the amount of storage a good storage bed will give you.

Bonaldo Cuff storage bed
Bonaldo Cuff storage bed

Bonaldo’s Cuff bed (above) is an uber stylish storage bed (with some very neat leather inserts on its headboard) and has what’s called a ‘Comodo’ storage base.  This is where the whole of the top lifts up with the help of gas pistons.  This means that not only will your bed stay made, always a big plus in our book, but you won’t have to shift any bedside furniture around before you can retrieve whatever it is you’ve stored. Anything to make life a tad easier!

Ozzio are a young Italian brand who major in space saving, transformable furniture.  From wall units that hide dining tables for eight (seriously) to cute coffee tables that have hidden storage and transform, like the one below, Bellagio, into a desk or something called a ‘dinette’ table. Great for TV dinners or a bit of sofa home-office working.

SCHOENBUCH: PERFECTING THE ART OF HALLWAY FURNITURE

‘Feel welcome’ is Schoenbuch’s guiding principle and this superb, luxury German brand is very welcome as part of the newest line-up at Go Modern. We got to know these masters of hallway furniture earlier in the year on a trip to Cologne and we were instantly blown-away by what they produce.  If you haven’t come across them before, be prepared to be impressed!  The company specialises in uber stylish, modular designs for the hall area, in unique widths and heights, with depths starting from just 20cm, all designed to fit the narrowest of spaces.

Schoenbuch’s designers begin with the knowledge that no two hallways are the same, from city lofts to commercial buildings or the smallest of domestic hallways.  The strive to produce perfect capsule furniture collections to suit individual locations. The result: outstanding hallway clothes storage and system furniture alongside smaller accessories such as clever shoe boxes and unusual mirrors.

And if you’re looking for innovative colours you’ll be spoilt for choice!  Most items are offered in around 26 matt or gloss lacquer colours from the fashionable Dusky Rose (fab against a darker painted wall – try it with Farrow & Ball’s Downpipe or Little Greene’s Royal Navy) and shades such as Steel Blue or the subtle Vanilla to complete the design statement.

SCHOENBUCH HESPERIDE COAT RACK, MIRROR & SHELF

The beautifully minimalist Hesperide collection (above) is designed by Carsten Gollnick for Schoenbuch, and in this styled set up (dont forget its modular) there’s a five-hook coat rack, tall framed mirror, and two wall mounted shelves, all in an ivory matt lacquer finish. We’re secretly coveting this hallway!

And just to show how versatile this system is, here it is again (below) in a high gloss black lacquer. This combination shows a slimline shoe box with an upholstered seat/lid in leather, and a narrow sideboard.  There’s also another version of the Hesperide mirror, this one has a square frame including oval and round smaller mirrors.

Confession. We love shoes. And we LOVE this Basic Shoe Cupboard.  It epitomises what Schoenbuch does best – simple, stylish, clever design.  It’s offered with a depth of just 20cm and cupboard doors that open/close using a beautifully smooth, quiet gas-filled spring. Plus, you can customise it by chosing designs such as a tray top or tempered glass. This version, below, in a glamorous high gloss white definitely gets our vote!

Confession Two.  Coats and bags.  We also like these (just a bit!) and the Line Coat Rackdesigned by Apartment 8 for Schoenbuch, is another example of a very clever design idea.  And as a system for hanging coats and bags, Line looks, and is, perfect.  It’s got an adjustable fold-out hook for hangers or you could pop your coat straight on.  In the example below, there are three bag hooks in polished chrome. Simple and fabulous, it’s also in a huge variety of coloured lacquers or wood finishes. The citrus yellow next to the pebble and ivory works really well don’t you think.

Decluttering … post summer holiday chilling / pre Christmas madness

It’s usually after the summer holidays and in the run up to Christmas, with thoughts of extra family and friends coming to stay, that (panicky) minds turn to decluttering (well… confessions from most of us on the team reveals this one!). So, in an attempt to make life a little less stressful we’ve pulled out a few of our latest designs to help put a little order into the chaos most of us surround ourselves with.

If it’s bigger changes you’re looking for then wall units will definitely provide a long-term solution.  There are lots of different styles to choose from, all modular, which means you can create exactly the design you want.

Jesse wall hung cupboards
Jesse wall hung cupboards

The Jesse wall hung cupboards above are a great idea for creating some extra storage space, taking everything up and away from the floor.  They can be bought singly or used as part of a complete wall of units.  They’re also extremely easy to mount on most walls with the doors arranged to lift-up or pull-down, while cupboards can be hung side by side with one single top. They’re great for media storage too with channels for cables etc.

If you’re always falling over shoes and boots maybe it’s time to think of creating some dedicated storage for them.  Something that’s easy on the eye and even easier for, say, the average teenager to get the hang of.  Porada’s Girilla shoe cupboard  is an incredibly practical, mirrored, wall mounted cupboard. The two front sections open up to reveal 12 adjustable metal shelves perfectly angled to store your shoes or boots.

But if the thought of fitting wall units and cupboards before Christmas makes you reach for the drinks cabinet… maybe look at introducing a few smaller things to help.  Italian manufacturer Bonaldo creates fabulous designs with everything from sofas to dining tables and beds. They also think about the smaller things too and their ‘Secret’ ottomans , new this year, are extremely cool.

They come in three sizes and have loads of practical storage space underneath the padded lids, which also make extremely comfortable seats. They can be upholstered in matching material, or you can mix and match textures and patterns to suit the design of your room. They’re fab for storing newspapers/magazines, toys, or throws and cushions. Not quite big enough for packing away relatives but there’s always a first!

Likewise, Bontempi Casa has designed a clever and stylish collection of coffee tables called Lounge, with loads of inner storage space.  They’re made in wonderful shapes and great materials: the lift up lid/tabletop is made from lacquered aluminium with oodles of colour choices and the sturdy wooden frame can be upholstered in lots of different fabric from eco-leather to wool.

So, a few ideas there from us.  For more ideas, including our very stylish Note side table with clever side pockets for pens and papers, check out the decluttering post on the Homes & Gardens website.

Milan – bringing home all the fun of the fair

The fabulous Salone del Mobile last month, one of the world’s most exciting furniture fairs, attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors through its doors and had some truly amazing new designs on offer.  We spotted so many superb pieces that we can’t wait to show you … so here’s a little taster of just a few of the great designs we spotted from two of our favourite brands.

Bonaldo is always ahead of the design field and never fails to impress us with its inspirational pieces. They also make incredible sofa beds … and what puts them ahead of the game is … that their sofa beds don’t LOOK like sofa beds – that’s the last thing you want in your living room!  The new Bandy sofa bed, designed by Vittorio Prevedello, is no exception. It’s got a great modern-retro look to it along with removable fabric or leather covers, and edged stitching in the same or contrasting colours.  It’s also a cinch to operate with an easy, manual mechanism designed to move the seat forward and simultaneously lower the backrest (because when you’re tired and you want to go to bed you really don’t want to be having a fight with a sofa bed!).

And how about the April, May, June shelves (love the names …although they remind us a little of some great aunts that it was best never to cross…).  And like those great aunts, they’re a bold trio… striking and a little out of the ordinary.  June (below) is in the black , with May in white and April in yellow … but you can choose colours to suit you.. including mint green, anthracite grey and powder pink, in matt painted metal.

We love Alain Gilles work (his Contrast bed is a firm favourite with everyone here). The Tracks table is one of his latest creations – a great extending glass table with a beautifully simple silhouette.  And in case you’re wondering …the name comes from the two, visible parallel steel beams under the glass table top that make-up the extension. It’s fantastic to be able to see the working of the mechanism – really unusual (remember when the Pompidou Centre was built and we all got excited about seeing the energy pipes in different colours on the outside… it’s kind of similar.. and we’re just as excited).

Mogg is one of our newest brands – quirky, highly unusual pieces that we think are destined to become collector’s pieces of the future. We’re all about contemporary design at Go Modern but so much modern design also gives a little nod to tradition, and these beautiful Donut Stools from Mogg have definitely done that. The designer, Alessandra Baldereschi, has used the ancient art of rush weaving to create the seats of her striking new stools.  Reed fibres are extremely hard wearing and very practical (easy to clean) which is certainly why they were used for seating years ago.  The tripod bases are made in metal with a lacquered grey or white finish or in a beautiful copper.

If you know New York at all you’ll understand why designers Mazia & Leonardo Dainelli called their new floor lamps for Mogg Tribeca, because, as they say, they’re always inspired by the city’s energy and magic, along with the feeling that ‘anything is possible’.   And with the Tribeca lamps ‘anything is possible’ as the dynamic duo have added a cleverly concealed USB dock to the bottom shelf of this stylish floor lamp. Love them!

So, there’s a little taste of some of our ‘finds’ from Milan… hope you like them as much as we do!
