Guaranteed beauty sleep for family & friends

Autumn is definitely in the air and we’ve also started thinking a little further ahead to Christmas.  The season of goodwill – and playing host to a myriad of family and friends. Which is great but, if you are anything like some of us at Go Modern, the perennial problem of where to put everyone/no room at the inn is, well, a perennial one.

So we got to thinking about how we could help and make everyone a little happier.  And thus the idea of a special sofabed, exclusive to Go Modern, was born.

The Happy Sofa Bed will, we’re hoping, be the bed of your dreams (and those of your guests).  Designed exclusively for us by Italian specialist Vibieffe, Happy is a stylish two-seater sofa that looks for all the world like the up-market, high quality, contemporary sofa that it is. But it’s also so much more.

Happy Sofa Bed
Happy Sofa Bed

Within its sturdy tubular steel frame, and deep sumptuous foam and feather cushions, lies the answer of where to put your wise men and ensure they have a good night’s sleep: A highly sophisticated bed mechanism with a comfortable 13cm sprung mattress ingeniously hidden inside the sofa base.

Happy

Happy is good looking enough to deserve taking centre-stage in your living room, spare bedroom or guest room. It’s also available in three sizes, with fully removable covers in cotton, linen, leather or own choice fabric. Its discrete angled feet are in chrome-plated aluminium. Made in Italy. Which all in all makes us very happy and we hope it will make you happy too.

We have a Happy on display in our Kings Road showroom at the moment so please pop in and try it for yourself.  We can’t promise angels, shepherds or wise men, just a very good, high-quality sofa bed that won’t disappoint.

Luxury upholstered beds – the latest Italian designs

At Go Modern we get very excited when Novamobili Italy launches a new collection. They make the kind of furniture we love: stylish and modern, big on function and swoon-worthy on the looks front.  And they’re especially good at bedroom furniture. Their beds always include great ideas such as clever storage, beautifully upholstered finishes, generous padding and elegant detailing.

So, we’re thrilled to announce the UK launch of some of Novamobili’s latest upholstered beds, including Modo, Brick, and Margot.  And you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to fabrics – there’s a choice of 120, including 24 in leather or eco-leather.

Novamobili Margot
Novamobili Margot

The very handsome Margot, above, was designed in-house by the Novamobili Studio team. What we love most is its low-key, elegance – a kind of ‘Kate Moss’ of the bed world. And, as well as the generously padded frame and headboard (OK – so after low-key elegance, the resemblance to Kate Moss goes no further) look at the extra design details such as some slightly quirky, angled metal legs. Fab! There are also two different heights to choose from for the mattress: flush with the bed or set 7cm below the top of the base frame. Did we mention that it’s all in the detail!

Novamobili Brick
Novamobili Brick

Studio Gherardi are the designers behind Brick, with its luxurious and deep upholstered headboard and frame.  Look out for the tailor-quality stitching too, which can be chosen in pinch or standard style to match the fabric, or blanket stitching in contrasting shades if you want to add a personal touch or your own quirky finish. As with Margot, there’s a choice of two heights for the mattress, flush or set 10cm below the frame, and it’s also available as a storage bed with a wonderfully roomy base.

Novamobili Modo
Novamobili Modo

Designed in-house by the Novamobili Studio team, Modo is the quietly chic member of the collection. The stand-out feature for us is its deeply padded headboard with some very neat, central, buttonless top-stitching, creating an air of relaxed sophistication. The generously upholstered, curved base is also available with two types of storage: ‘simple’ which allows the whole base to be lifted, giving you easy access from three sides, or ‘standard’ which lifts from the end of the bed. Which style you chose obviously depends on the size of your bedroom and what other furniture you have around the bed.

So, we hope you like Novamobili’s latest designs as much as we do. And borrowing from one of our greatest plays about the world of slumber: “Take pains. Be perfect.” We think Novamobili have done just that! Pop over to the Go Modern site and take a look at all of our upholstered bed collection… Sweet Dreams!

PS – and of course we also have a great mid-summer sale on at the moment!

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR OUR SPACE-HUNGRY LIVES

There’s something about the post Christmas period and start of a New Year that prompts, in most of us at least (quick straw poll of the Go Modern team), a desperate feeling of needing more space. Or at least a big declutter. Or maybe we should have just got out more over the holiday!

The great thing is that there’s no need to compromise on style to achieve more space. Lots of the brands we work with have used their creative energy to come up with some very clever and stylish products that will maximise your existing space and give you the cool, sleek, uncluttered look you dream of.

To kick-start your search we’ve pulled together just a few ideas that might help…

Mogg DPI wall units
Mogg DPI wall units

Quirky Italian brand Mogg creates lots of great furniture that makes us think differently about conventional design. These fab wall units (above), called DPI, have a slightly industrial look, which we love, and they’re modular/varying sizes.  The styling here shows them used very creatively as a wall hung bedside table and book storage.

Novamobili Wall Unit/Bookcase
Novamobili Wall Unit/Bookcase

And talking of books, we’ve got tons of them (even more since Christmas!).  Like good friends you never want to part with… kind of.  But what to do with them all if you don’t operate the ‘one in/one out’ system?  Novamobili are the people to ask – specialising in wall units (and some great wardrobes) that ooze Italian style.  The Wall Unit/Bookcase 08 (above) has a very ordered, contemporary look with bookshelves split into individual compartments to help with the sorting, along with sleek, complementing drawers. Plus…all your TV cables, DVD systems, audio equipment, the whole lot, can be hidden away neatly in specially created channels and behind panels, so the dreadful electronic spaghetti cable mess need never haunt you again.

Novamobili Wall Unit/Bookcase 04
Novamobili Wall Unit/Bookcase 04

Here’s another smaller version of the Wall Unit/Bookcase above, showing just how versatile this great system is.

And dont under-estimate the amount of storage a good storage bed will give you.

Bonaldo Cuff storage bed
Bonaldo Cuff storage bed

Bonaldo’s Cuff bed (above) is an uber stylish storage bed (with some very neat leather inserts on its headboard) and has what’s called a ‘Comodo’ storage base.  This is where the whole of the top lifts up with the help of gas pistons.  This means that not only will your bed stay made, always a big plus in our book, but you won’t have to shift any bedside furniture around before you can retrieve whatever it is you’ve stored. Anything to make life a tad easier!

Ozzio are a young Italian brand who major in space saving, transformable furniture.  From wall units that hide dining tables for eight (seriously) to cute coffee tables that have hidden storage and transform, like the one below, Bellagio, into a desk or something called a ‘dinette’ table. Great for TV dinners or a bit of sofa home-office working.

So, there you have it.  Five interesting, stylish designs from us that will help with our space-hungry lives – and maybe even restore a bit of sanity, who knows!  Lots more on the Go Modern site so do check them out! www.gomodern.co.uk

PS – We’ve also got a winter sale on at the moment – so hop over and make the most of it!

Parental warning – this furniture might seriously improve your children’s tidiness

So week two of the UK spring/school holidays and we’ve noticed a marked interest in children’s bedroom furniture… with a big emphasis on storage.  There’s nothing like a holiday combined with cold weather to make you realise that your house is pulsating with a lot of small people and just too much stuff!  Well, we can’t offer Narnia but we can solve the problem of where to store everything.

Our Italian partner Battistella has come over all Mary Poppins like and created Nidi, a wonderful new range of children’s bedroom furniture, that includes everything from ‘hidden’ extra beds, to walk-in wardrobes, fitted cupboards, pull-down desks and incredibly neat storage ideas.

Nidi children's bedroom furniture
Nidi children’s bedroom furniture

It’s all completely modular so you can chose as much or as little of it as you want. With modifiable sizes, and tailor-made extras that will be unique to you – so, an extra cupboard, bunk bed steps arranged on the other side, pull-out toy boxes; they’ve thought of everything.  We’ve featured some room set images here to give you an idea of what can be achieved (and they also do rugs and wallpaper too).

Gino bunk bed
Gino bunk bed

The Gino bunk bed (above) has two beds, with a clever pull-out bed below that’s great for extra guests, or you can use the space for storage.  The top bunk can also be chosen as a ‘tipping bunk’ which will fold down neatly when it’s not in use. The wardrobe in this composition has been fitted at the side of the bunk and it’s a ‘walk-in’, with shelves and pull-down rails (so no excuses for a floordrobe!) and optional internal lighting.  And don’t worry about the graffiti – the finish of the wardrobe here is a rewriteable whiteboard surface (and it’s dry wipeable in case the artwork turns out to be a little too inspired!).

Tippy bunk bed
Tippy bunk bed

The Tippy bunk bed and desk is an incredible piece of design which incorporates two beds, storage space and a desk all in one unit. The desk is pulled down (by mechanised gas pump) to reveal the hidden second bed behind the desk. When the desk is needed, it simply pulls up, and the mechanism folds the bed neatly behind it. And, a good one this for teenagers, you don’t even have to move anything off the desk! There are also wheeled storage boxes available which will fit tidily under the second bed/desk.

Woody children's wardrobe & Hug children's storage bed

Let’s talk colour – we’ve got a rainbow’s worth of them – from moody mauve to raucous red – with over 15 different lacquers to choose from. The design team at Battistella has also created a superb selection of finishing touches: the wardrobe door knobs come in 14 different colours, four sizes and can be placed in three different positions – so how cool is that. And there are lots of really ‘grown up’ details too – have a closer look at the Hug bed in the shot above and you’ll notice the ultra-stylish blanket stitching around the headboard, which can be done in matching or complementing colours.  And there’s more storage with an optional storage base.

Happy spring holidays!

(N.B. – Parental warning – the child in the above shot is a model and we’re assured that, even with our great Nidi furniture, his room isn’t normally this tidy!).

2016 colours: Rose Quartz and Cherished Gold

We’re tickled pink (ahem) that the main Pantone Colour of 2016 is… Rose Quartz.  So, basically pink… but there are so many variations on this shade that it’s easy to get it seriously wrong in an interior.

Rose Quartz, according to the experts over at colour specialists Pantone, is “a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Like a serene sunset, flushed cheek or budding flower, Rose Quartz reminds us to reflect on our surroundings during the busy but lighthearted spring and summer months”.  So, there you have it. Hard to imagine the spring/summer months with our rotten weather at the moment but hopefully they’re just round the corner.

We love the way our Italian friends over at Bonaldo have used this colour on one of their newest bed designs, Picabia. The bed frame and three of the main headboard cushions are in shades of dusky pink, with other cushions plus the bed throw and wall colours, in complementing linens, wenge and greys. Beautiful!

Bonaldo Picabia bed
Bonaldo Picabia bed

Picabia is a really unusual bed design with five individual cushions that make-up the headboard, all of which can be upholstered in matching or contrasting patterns and textures, a nice alternative to opting for just one overall colour.

Bonaldo have also used shades of pink on their new Blazer armchair by Mauro Lipparini.

Bonaldo Blazer armchair
Bonaldo Blazer armchair

We love this design which Lipparini has had great fun with, creating a design silhouette that, he tells us, is similar to that of a jacket draped over the back of a chair. In this image, Bonaldo have used a great combination of materials, with a dusky pink fabric for the main seating and soft grey leather for the backing.  Those colour pairings never seem to fail. And the grey geometric wallpaper in the background gives it all a very grown up look.

A little closer to home, Dulux the paint people have chosen Cherished Gold as their 2016 colour. They’re also “celebrating the beauty of contrast, whether that’s the difference between pale and dark, or organisation and chaos”. We’re not sure on a personal level we ‘celebrate’ the contrast between organisation and chaos – just achieving a little more organisation would be welcome!

Novamobili’s contemporary Clio cupboard is available in a beautiful ochre finish (similar to Cherished Gold) along with four other finishes, and what we love about the styling here is the contrast between the striking deep yellow/gold of the cupboard set against the deep blue/grey of the wall. Two combinations that are complete show stealers, with the earthy gold adding a touch of glamour in an unshowy way.

As with any colours, lighting is incredibly important – a colour that might look great in daylight in a north facing room (low light) might look totally washed out under electric light.  Our neighbours, John Cullen, just along the Kings Road are the experts to talk to if you’re looking for some advice on how to cleverly light a room.

And some brand new and very stylish pendant lights here from Italian specialists Contardi Lighting, who have also used shades of gold, along with accents of blue, white and yellow in a fabulous new collection called Calypso.

Designers Servomuto have taken shapes from 1940s South America and added frosted glass diffusers to create a slightly industrial feel, with ceiling roses in satin brass.

So, whether it’s Rose Quartz or Cherished Gold – be inspired, be brave!  We have so many different fabrics to choose from at Go Modern it can sometimes be quite daunting – but isn’t it great to have left the acres of beige and taupe behind at last!

Go Modern’s Winter Sale

Christmas at Go Modern
Christmas at Go Modern

The fabulous sofa you can see in our Christmas window is the Marc-U and we’ve had this one covered in a luxuriously rich velvety red fabric as befitting the season.  Standing alongside the Marc-U is the stylish Mogg TRI.BE.CA. floor lamp, designed by Marzia & Leonardo Dainelli, with it’s clever USB dock built into the bottom shelf. This one’s in matt black but it’s also available in white.  And to ward off the winter cold, our eco-friendly bio-ethanol fire from Cocoon is keeping the showroom nice and toasty.

We’ve really enjoyed 2014’s interior trends… indigo blue’s been a popular choice, along with a number of accessories in striking marble finishes.

Porada Ziggy Square coffee table
Porada Ziggy Square coffee table

Porada’s Ziggy Square coffee table, above, designed by Carlo Ballabio has a magnificent marble top with different marble colours to choose from including a brown Emperador dark marble or, as seen here, a white Calacatta marble.

Painted metal too has loomed large, offered in an eye-wateringly different number of colours, allowing you to be daringly outlandish or just keep things elegantly simple.

Bonaldo Kadou coffee/sidetables
Bonaldo Kadou sidetables

The Kadou side table, designed by Ryosuke Fukusada, has a top and legs in painted metal in a total of nine different colours from coral red to ivory.  Copper too has been beautifully incorporated into even the most humble of designs to add a touch of extra luxury, seen here with Mogg’s kitchen stools, Donut.

In the bed department, tall headboards were the order of the day, with edged-stitching and lots of ‘wrap around’ corners providing a gorgeous cocoon-like effect.

Lema Edel bed
Lema Edel bed

Lema’s Edel bed above features one of the many curved headboards we’ve seen but what we especially love about this design is that the whole bed appears to float above the ground. The shape of the Edel headboard is also accentuated with on-trend, piped, ribbed stitching. Superb.

So, what were your favourite design tends this year?

And don’t forget – December 29th-January 23rd – 15% off orders over £1,000 in our winter sale… so take a little virtual tour and start making a wish list: www.gomodern.co.uk.

Happy Christmas and all good wishes for 2015 from everyone at Go Modern.

All about the kids – ciao bella!

Italians, it’s always said, love babies and children, and nothing proves this more than the latest designs from Italian brand Battistella and their Nidi range of children’s furniture. We’re so impressed with their latest original, contemporary designs which combine style, imagination and tons of practical ideas.  There are three collections to choose from based around the themes of art, nature …. and fun!

Nidi Soft Collection
Nidi Soft Collection

The Soft Collection (above) includes this amazingly versatile loft bed, with a matching ladder that can be positioned at the front or side, and the option of fitting a desk below the bed.  There’s even a handy ‘toy organiser’ between the soft padded frame and the mattress.

Or introduce the idea of creating your own art with the Graphic Collection (below)

Nidi Graphic Collection
Nidi Graphic Collection

Designed to encourage the budding Banksys out there, the Graphic collection features white-board surfaces on desks and wardrobes.  They even include the pens along with a handy pen holder (probably not very Banksy that bit – but we think it’s a nice touch) which doubles up as a door handle.  And while artistic skills are being honed, you’ll be pleased to know that the white-boards are completely re-writeable/cleanable with dry-wipe surfaces.

Keeping in touch with nature is also a theme and the Woody Collection (below) features lots of natural finishes, while still allowing for pops of bright colours along with more muted shades for the older crowd.

Nidi Woody Collection
Nidi Woody Collection

Woody, like the other two ranges is modular, and contains storage beds, with deep under drawers, wardrobes, desks, wall units, shelves – everything in fact to start a children’s room from scratch and create something really stylish and unique.

There’s also tons of accessories too, from rugs and wall stickers to toy boxes, side tables and felt poufs. Makes you want to be 10 again doesn’t it!

Not too early to be thinking about Christmas!!

Yes, we know it’s (mostly) sunny outside and you’re probably (mostly) on holiday… but we thought this might be a good time to start you thinking about CHRISTMAS!  The UK press has been thinking about it for the past month or so and all the Christmas summer press shows have already taken place (this is where journalists & stylists rush around central London in the heat, eating mince pies and thinking unseasonable thoughts, all working on their Christmas issues).

So, on to Christmas furniture.  Do you remember how last year you swore you wouldn’t host another Christmas without the right size dining table?  Well, now’s the time to start looking.  We have some fabulous new tables including a masterpiece of design from Alivar, one of Italy’s top brands.  The Oblique extends from 200cm right up to 280cm without altering its shape and the legs always stay at the end of the table – so there’s no need to play footsie (unless you want to!).

With extra guests, sleeping arrangements can also cause headaches in our experience.  A sofa bed is the answer and we have lots to choose from and there are also lots out there, but if you want something that really doesn’t look like a sofa bed we have just the design. Bonaldo’s Bandy not only doesn’t look like your traditional sofa bed it’s also extremely comfortable. Bonaldo has a wealth of experience in this area and the Bandy has been designed to last, with a sturdy frame and beautifully upholstered with layer upon layer of foam.  It’s also very easy to operate (even after a few Christmas G&T’s): simply pull the back down flat and the seat simultaneously moves forwards.  The Bandy comes with a Go Modern warning however – it’s so comfortable your guests may decide to stay a little longer than Christmas…

And then there are the finishing touches (and where to hang all those extra visitors’ coats). The beautiful Bonaldo Trees are not a brand new design but soooo lovely we have to give them a mention here.  These are a new version of the popular Tree coat stand but with a light inside, so they’ll not only light your hallway prettily but also provide somewhere for people to hang their outdoor gear (& coo over).   Why buy a traditional tree we say?

P.S. Our summer sale is also still on at the moment – 15% off all orders over £1,000 (Quote coupon code: SUMMER).  What’s stopping you & Merry Christmas!

Milan – bringing home all the fun of the fair

The fabulous Salone del Mobile last month, one of the world’s most exciting furniture fairs, attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors through its doors and had some truly amazing new designs on offer.  We spotted so many superb pieces that we can’t wait to show you … so here’s a little taster of just a few of the great designs we spotted from two of our favourite brands.

Bonaldo is always ahead of the design field and never fails to impress us with its inspirational pieces. They also make incredible sofa beds … and what puts them ahead of the game is … that their sofa beds don’t LOOK like sofa beds – that’s the last thing you want in your living room!  The new Bandy sofa bed, designed by Vittorio Prevedello, is no exception. It’s got a great modern-retro look to it along with removable fabric or leather covers, and edged stitching in the same or contrasting colours.  It’s also a cinch to operate with an easy, manual mechanism designed to move the seat forward and simultaneously lower the backrest (because when you’re tired and you want to go to bed you really don’t want to be having a fight with a sofa bed!).

Bonaldo Sofa Bed

And how about the April, May, June shelves (love the names …although they remind us a little of some great aunts that it was best never to cross…).  And like those great aunts, they’re a bold trio… striking and a little out of the ordinary.  June (below) is in the black , with May in white and April in yellow … but you can choose colours to suit you.. including mint green, anthracite grey and powder pink, in matt painted metal.

April May June Shelves

We love Alain Gilles work (his Contrast bed is a firm favourite with everyone here). The Tracks table is one of his latest creations – a great extending glass table with a beautifully simple silhouette.  And in case you’re wondering …the name comes from the two, visible parallel steel beams under the glass table top that make-up the extension. It’s fantastic to be able to see the working of the mechanism – really unusual (remember when the Pompidou Centre was built and we all got excited about seeing the energy pipes in different colours on the outside… it’s kind of similar.. and we’re just as excited).

Tracks Dining Table

Mogg is one of our newest brands – quirky, highly unusual pieces that we think are destined to become collector’s pieces of the future. We’re all about contemporary design at Go Modern but so much modern design also gives a little nod to tradition, and these beautiful Donut Stools from Mogg have definitely done that. The designer, Alessandra Baldereschi, has used the ancient art of rush weaving to create the seats of her striking new stools.  Reed fibres are extremely hard wearing and very practical (easy to clean) which is certainly why they were used for seating years ago.  The tripod bases are made in metal with a lacquered grey or white finish or in a beautiful copper.

If you know New York at all you’ll understand why designers Mazia & Leonardo Dainelli called their new floor lamps for Mogg Tribeca, because, as they say, they’re always inspired by the city’s energy and magic, along with the feeling that ‘anything is possible’.   And with the Tribeca lamps ‘anything is possible’ as the dynamic duo have added a cleverly concealed USB dock to the bottom shelf of this stylish floor lamp. Love them!

So, there’s a little taste of some of our ‘finds’ from Milan… hope you like them as much as we do!

Lema – the latest luxury brand to join Go Modern

We mentioned at the beginning of the year an exciting new name to join the Go Modern family, Lema, one of Italy’s most prestigous brands – and the perfect name to complement our other luxury brands.

If you know Lema at all you will know that its world famous name is synonymous with attention to detail, the highest quality materials and an ability to create unique pieces of furniture.  The company is based in the heart of the Northen Italian Brianza furniture making district and has been producing beautifully made furniture since the 1940s.

Lema is one of Europe’s best wardrobe and bookcase/wall unit specialists (their Elegant wardrobe is a best seller already!), and they also have a fantastic collection of sofas, beds, bedroom furntiture, and dining tables, as well as exquisite one-off pieces.

The Fina Sliding door wardrobe is a great example of the kind of design Lema is known for; a sleek, natual anodized aluminium frame surrounding matt or gloss lacquered door panels.  There’s also a huge choice of 40 colours in matt lacquer and four in the lacquered glass. Sizes too are varied, with three heights and several widths.  Superb!

We love the Selecta bookcase system so much it’s being installed in our showroom as we type! Lema introduced their first free-standing bookcase system back in 1978, and Selecta is the bang-up-to-the-minute evolutionary result. With over 30 years of experience in creating these systems, Selecta incorporates the best of everything to date – and it’s one of the most versatile shelving systems around today. Pop in, have a look and be impressed!

The Mustique sofa is one of Lemas newest designs, created for them by Gordon Guillaumier. And it’s gorgeous. Wide and elegant, with a slim, metal structure and slimline cushions that are so, so comfortable.  The leather version, seen here, also has raw ‘unfinished’ seams on the boxy arms giving it, we think, a really cool, urban look.

We have quite simply fallen in love with Wing – an achingly beautiful piece of craftmanship.  Designed in 2012 by Werner Aisslinger all we can say is: stunning (and we try not to use that word too often!).  It’s made from light oak and has a beautifully sinuous petal shape, with the natural wood grain shown-off to its best within the curved sweep of the design. And if that isn’t enough, Aisslinger has created another treat for you – when you turn Wing around, a ‘spine’ of solid wood is revealed giving the whole piece a striking architectural feel… its a kind of ‘weak at the knees’ piece…

Wing chair
Lema Wing Chair

And if you’re looking for something a little bit different, a collector’s piece … then the one-of-a-kind Booken by Yael and Shay at Raw Edges for Lema will get your pulse racing.  They’ve taken the ‘concept of the book as an object, transformed its function, and reinvetned it’.  And thus you have Booken – a quirky and totally unique bookcase: storage for your favourite books (also allowing you to ‘mark’ your favourite pages), a side table and bookshelf in one.  And if it suits your room style more you can also wall hang Booken. It comes with 20 oak ‘book-marks’ and you can order extra if you need them.

Taking pride of place in our Kings Road window at the moment is the Novelist writing desk by the internationally renowned Christophe Pillet.  It was one of Lema’s key pieces at the Milan show and so deserved its centre stage presence.  In rue Pillet style, it cleverly evokes a traditional writing desk with a great modernist-retro look.  It’s made in sold canaletto walnut with a coffee-coloured leather insert in the desk top, plus an exciting and very neat pop-up inlay for your pens and pencils.  A chrome-plated steel frame and two ultra slim side-drawers complete the look. Absolutely no excuses for not finishing that book now!
