Zigzag motifs, Italian style, Missoni Home

Zigzag motifs are apparently ‘in’!  Well, they’ve never been ‘out’ to be honest.

We’ve had a long love-affair with the incredible fabrics and clothes produced by the Italian design-house Missoni, and in 2016 we were lucky enough to begin working with one of the company’s sub-brands Missoni Home.  We’d always loved the crazy chevron or zigzag  pattern the company is famous for, and Missoni’s clever and imaginative use of this ancient pattern works beautifully across their furniture and home accessories.

But a room full of zigzags may, some might say, be a little too much.  It’s a bold design, as is anything geometric.  Throw into the mix bright and clashing colours and if you’re not careful you’re creating a 70’s psychedelia throwback nightmare.  With the current trend for dark walls and heritage colours however (thanks Farrow & Ball), we’re constantly advised by interior designers to use pops of colour to bring a room alive.  Enter stage right: Missoni Home.

And it’s not just brightly coloured zigzags.  Add to the mix bold stripes and some near hallucinogenic florals and you have a smorgasbord of colour and pattern to pick and choose from.

Missoni Home Navaleno Rug
Missoni Home Navaleno Rug

The Missoni Home Navaleno rug above demonstrates the Missoni chevron pattern at its best.  Depending on which camp you’re in (‘throw caution to the wind, mix and match, yolo’… or ‘love each piece individually but… together?’) this particular styling is either heaven or will make you want to lie down for awhile in a room with dark walls. Personally we love it! The stylist has placed the rug with a Missoni Home pouf which, as you can see, has both the famous zigzags and the company’s bold, beautiful florals.

All of Missoni Home’s designs are manufactured in Italy and anyone who is lucky enough to own a piece of clothing, an accessory or furniture will know how high the quality is.  The Navalino rug is a pure wool and cotton blend and incredibly soft but hard-wearing. The sheer number of colours used is awe inspiring but not one of them seems to dominate the entire colour palette.  Which in our book is very clever.

We love poufs (or any piece of furniture that legitimately insists you put your feet up).  You couldn’t say no really. Missoni has created some of the most comfortable and fun poufs we’ve come across. Each pouf  is firm, filled with polystyrene beads that permit just the correct angle for lounging, and the fabric covers are fully removable.

Missoni Home Pallina Pouf
Missoni Home Pallina Pouf

The Missoni Pallina pouf above is simply stunning.  The fabric used here is called Passifora and it’s just one of so many beautiful floral fabrics on offer.  Think passion flowers, sunflowers, lilies… It’s probably one of Missoni’s most famous floral designs, originally seen on the catwalk printed on their silk dresses, skirts and scarves.

We have a huge choice of Missoni fabrics to chose from so if there’s a particular colour scheme you have in mind, a favourite flower, or a mixture of the two, we’d put money on being able to come up with a design to fall in love with. Pop into Go Modern’s Kings Road showroom to have a look at fabric samples or give us a ring to find out more.  UK fire regulations are quite rightly very stringent, and some Missoni fabrics are not available here but are available overseas. Again, come in and chat to us, as there is an option to have some of the unavailable fabrics specially treated so that they do comply with UK fire law.

However, it’s not just about the fabrics.

Home is one of the great passions of Rosita Missoni, the Missoni ‘matriarch’, who oversees the Missoni Home line.  Born into a family of textile industrialists who produced shawls and embroidered fabrics, she married Ottavio Missoni in 1953 and together they launched and developed a knitwear business in a small workshop in Gallarate, Italy. The couple later moved to the company’s current headquarters in Sumirago, Varese, where Rosita created the lines of clothing while Ottavio designed the fabrics. By the 1960s Missoni was at the cutting edge of Italian fashion.

Rosita is quoted as saying, “… the house is alive, it always moves, it’s never over …”. And her personal philosophy and design vision for furnishings is expressed through Missoni Home.  Pieces are innovative with a linear form and easy to introduce into existing areas. Using Missoni’s fabrics the brand aims to play a game of indoors/outdoors bringing the ‘magical atmosphere’ of nature inside.  The look is both ‘formal and informal’, ‘artful but light’, with ‘forms which separate and unite’.  The overall philosophy: simply to create pieces that will help make ‘a versatile and welcoming place for family and friends’.

The striking Innitil sofa does just that. It’s a roomy three seater with a linear back and armrest.  The solid wood frame is covered in a multi-density, crush proof polyurethane foam and the covers are removable.  The fabric used for the styling here is Pasadena, inspired by a Californian west coast vibe, using a hypnotic geometric jacquard pattern.

Then just when you think your eyeballs wont take anymore colour, comes the monochrome… and a brand new piece of design.

Missoni Home Miss upholstered dining chairs
Missoni Home Miss upholstered dining chairs

The Miss dining chairs are beautifully upholstered, with slim legs, arms and backs and a  robust steel frame giving just the right strength and stability expected of a dining chair. The expanded polyurethane cushions have variable densities for maximum comfort, perfect for long, relaxed dinners. There’s a freshness about the design of these new chairs that we just love, and the black and white ‘zebra’ print fabric used here is Neuss linen with a macro-flame pattern.  Simply stunning, like a huge photo blow up of the original chevron pattern. The Miss range also has a dining armchair too – the same style but with wonderfully exaggerated vertical arms that look like wings, which might just whisk you off after one glass of Chianti too many.

And if Missoni plays the game of indoors/outdoors with their fabrics, their stunning outdoor furniture collection is a game we could play for ever. Lots to choose from including chaise longues, garden sofas, armchairs and this amazing leather coffee table that exudes Italian style.

The  elegant Cordula coffee table has an extra-clear glass table top and the solid steel frame below is wrapped in a beautiful leather weave.  There’s also a matching armchair  to complete the look.  Beautiful design with Missoni’s usual attention to detail and innovative use of materials.

So, as we always say, hop over to the Go Modern site and take a look at all of our great Missoni Home furniture designs and share our love of this wonderful Italian brand’s heritage and style.

Storage – some well ordered ideas!

As you may have noticed, we’re very big on storage ideas at Go Modern. And the trickier the space presented to us the more we love it.  There is a great feature in the March 2018 issue of Essential Kitchen Bathroom and Bedroom Magazine about this very thing… featuring a Q&A with … US! So here are a few tips and ideas below based on what we shared with EKBB (although do go out and buy the magazine – it’s always a very good read!).

Getting the right balance between storage and space in a bedroom is crucial. We often find clients need more storage than they have space for so we play around with ideas, trying to incorporate storage wherever we can.  Building wardrobes right up to the ceiling, using storage beds and tall chests of drawers in smaller spaces. We combine this sometimes with decorative hanging shelves or slimmer wall units.  A bridged wardrobe around the head of a bed can also be a great use of space.  The result should always work aesthetically as well as leaving you with plenty of space to move around.

If a client is thinking of a fitted wardrobe system, we start with the doors; hanging door wardrobes have smaller cabinets which can also be divided inside, so if a client has a lot of different storage needs we would normally recommend those. Sliding doors on the other hand have a cleaner look for small spaces but are actually less flexible in terms of their inside storage.

Smaller accessories such as dressing tables are really important.  You can also get creative with a hanging desk with a fold down-top and interior LED lit mirror, or a small wall-hung shelving unit.  Remember to look at the space between wardrobe cabinets too, as this can often accommodate a table as well as shelves, cupboards and a small chest of drawers, with fitted doors to hide things away when they’re not in use.

Our brands are a great and equal measure of aesthetics and practicality.  The days of having to completely sacrifice style to get the best fitted storage are well and truly over.  It’s often more economical to invest in beautiful semi-fitted designer storage than it is to get alternatives.  And there are so many gorgeous designs to choose from – we are seeing everything including textured doors with leather, gloss or matt finises, or a mixture of the two, and lots of unique finishing touches such as statement handles.

Take a look around our site or pop into our Kings Road showroom and have a chat – you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what we can offer.

Guaranteed beauty sleep for family & friends

Autumn is definitely in the air and we’ve also started thinking a little further ahead to Christmas.  The season of goodwill – and playing host to a myriad of family and friends. Which is great but, if you are anything like some of us at Go Modern, the perennial problem of where to put everyone/no room at the inn is, well, a perennial one.

So we got to thinking about how we could help and make everyone a little happier.  And thus the idea of a special sofabed, exclusive to Go Modern, was born.

The Happy Sofa Bed will, we’re hoping, be the bed of your dreams (and those of your guests).  Designed exclusively for us by Italian specialist Vibieffe, Happy is a stylish two-seater sofa that looks for all the world like the up-market, high quality, contemporary sofa that it is. But it’s also so much more.

Happy Sofa Bed

Within its sturdy tubular steel frame, and deep sumptuous foam and feather cushions, lies the answer of where to put your wise men and ensure they have a good night’s sleep: A highly sophisticated bed mechanism with a comfortable 13cm sprung mattress ingeniously hidden inside the sofa base.

Happy

Happy is good looking enough to deserve taking centre-stage in your living room, spare bedroom or guest room. It’s also available in three sizes, with fully removable covers in cotton, linen, leather or own choice fabric. Its discrete angled feet are in chrome-plated aluminium. Made in Italy. Which all in all makes us very happy and we hope it will make you happy too.

We have a Happy on display in our Kings Road showroom at the moment so please pop in and try it for yourself.  We can’t promise angels, shepherds or wise men, just a very good, high-quality sofa bed that won’t disappoint.

Luxury upholstered beds – the latest Italian designs

At Go Modern we get very excited when Novamobili Italy launches a new collection. They make the kind of furniture we love: stylish and modern, big on function and swoon-worthy on the looks front.  And they’re especially good at bedroom furniture. Their beds always include great ideas such as clever storage, beautifully upholstered finishes, generous padding and elegant detailing.

So, we’re thrilled to announce the UK launch of some of Novamobili’s latest upholstered beds, including Modo, Brick, and Margot.  And you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to fabrics – there’s a choice of 120, including 24 in leather or eco-leather.

Novamobili Margot
Novamobili Margot

The very handsome Margot, above, was designed in-house by the Novamobili Studio team. What we love most is its low-key, elegance – a kind of ‘Kate Moss’ of the bed world. And, as well as the generously padded frame and headboard (OK – so after low-key elegance, the resemblance to Kate Moss goes no further) look at the extra design details such as some slightly quirky, angled metal legs. Fab! There are also two different heights to choose from for the mattress: flush with the bed or set 7cm below the top of the base frame. Did we mention that it’s all in the detail!

Novamobili Brick
Novamobili Brick

Studio Gherardi are the designers behind Brick, with its luxurious and deep upholstered headboard and frame.  Look out for the tailor-quality stitching too, which can be chosen in pinch or standard style to match the fabric, or blanket stitching in contrasting shades if you want to add a personal touch or your own quirky finish. As with Margot, there’s a choice of two heights for the mattress, flush or set 10cm below the frame, and it’s also available as a storage bed with a wonderfully roomy base.

Novamobili Modo
Novamobili Modo

Designed in-house by the Novamobili Studio team, Modo is the quietly chic member of the collection. The stand-out feature for us is its deeply padded headboard with some very neat, central, buttonless top-stitching, creating an air of relaxed sophistication. The generously upholstered, curved base is also available with two types of storage: ‘simple’ which allows the whole base to be lifted, giving you easy access from three sides, or ‘standard’ which lifts from the end of the bed. Which style you chose obviously depends on the size of your bedroom and what other furniture you have around the bed.

So, we hope you like Novamobili’s latest designs as much as we do. And borrowing from one of our greatest plays about the world of slumber: “Take pains. Be perfect.” We think Novamobili have done just that! Pop over to the Go Modern site and take a look at all of our upholstered bed collection… Sweet Dreams!

PS – and of course we also have a great mid-summer sale on at the moment!

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR OUR SPACE-HUNGRY LIVES

There’s something about the post Christmas period and start of a New Year that prompts, in most of us at least (quick straw poll of the Go Modern team), a desperate feeling of needing more space. Or at least a big declutter. Or maybe we should have just got out more over the holiday!

The great thing is that there’s no need to compromise on style to achieve more space. Lots of the brands we work with have used their creative energy to come up with some very clever and stylish products that will maximise your existing space and give you the cool, sleek, uncluttered look you dream of.

To kick-start your search we’ve pulled together just a few ideas that might help…

Mogg DPI wall units
Mogg DPI wall units

Quirky Italian brand Mogg creates lots of great furniture that makes us think differently about conventional design. These fab wall units (above), called DPI, have a slightly industrial look, which we love, and they’re modular/varying sizes.  The styling here shows them used very creatively as a wall hung bedside table and book storage.

Novamobili Wall Unit/Bookcase
Novamobili Wall Unit/Bookcase

And talking of books, we’ve got tons of them (even more since Christmas!).  Like good friends you never want to part with… kind of.  But what to do with them all if you don’t operate the ‘one in/one out’ system?  Novamobili are the people to ask – specialising in wall units (and some great wardrobes) that ooze Italian style.  The Wall Unit/Bookcase 08 (above) has a very ordered, contemporary look with bookshelves split into individual compartments to help with the sorting, along with sleek, complementing drawers. Plus…all your TV cables, DVD systems, audio equipment, the whole lot, can be hidden away neatly in specially created channels and behind panels, so the dreadful electronic spaghetti cable mess need never haunt you again.

Here’s another smaller version of the Wall Unit/Bookcase above, showing just how versatile this great system is.

And dont under-estimate the amount of storage a good storage bed will give you.

Bonaldo Cuff storage bed
Bonaldo Cuff storage bed

Bonaldo’s Cuff bed (above) is an uber stylish storage bed (with some very neat leather inserts on its headboard) and has what’s called a ‘Comodo’ storage base.  This is where the whole of the top lifts up with the help of gas pistons.  This means that not only will your bed stay made, always a big plus in our book, but you won’t have to shift any bedside furniture around before you can retrieve whatever it is you’ve stored. Anything to make life a tad easier!

Ozzio are a young Italian brand who major in space saving, transformable furniture.  From wall units that hide dining tables for eight (seriously) to cute coffee tables that have hidden storage and transform, like the one below, Bellagio, into a desk or something called a ‘dinette’ table. Great for TV dinners or a bit of sofa home-office working.

So, there you have it.  Five interesting, stylish designs from us that will help with our space-hungry lives – and maybe even restore a bit of sanity, who knows!  Lots more on the Go Modern site so do check them out! www.gomodern.co.uk

PS – We’ve also got a winter sale on at the moment – so hop over and make the most of it!

INTRODUCING MISSONI HOME FURNITURE

A very BIG announcement from us this month with the introduction of the most iconic of brands: Missoni!  We are thrilled to announce that Go Modern is now partnering with this very special, much loved Italian design house to sell MISSONI HOME FURNITURE.  We’ve been fans forever… so there’s much excitement in our bit of the Kings Road!

Missoni, as you are probably aware, was established in the 1950s as a small knitware business and grew to be the internationally recognized fashion brand.  Its colourful zigzag motifs, stripes, waves and patchworks of geometrics and florals are instantly recognisable. The Missoni Home line followed some years later, when the company’s beautiful fabrics were successfully transferred to a large collection of small home accessories.

Taking things one step further,  Go Modern is the first and only UK retailer to sell Missoni’s contemporary furniture collection which includes sofas, beds, armchairs, screens and a wide range of beautiful outdoor furniture.  Check out the full collection of our MISSONI HOME FURNITURE  here.

So, less chat…. let’s show you a few pieces….

New for 2016 is the MISSONI HOME ADAR SOFA – a beautifully slim-line sofa seen here in Missoni fabric Realeza, a striking monochrome geometric weave.  The Adar is a modular design and includes armless, central seating units along with left/right hand seats.  The covers are removeable and, of course, there’s an incredible selection of Missoni fabrics to choose from.

The MISSONI HOME TIAMAT SOFA is a wonderfully roomy, semi-circular sofa offering the perfect lounging design.  It’s pictured here in the vibrant Samoa fabric, taken from Missoni’s brand new Oriental Garden fabric collection.

And pop into our Kings Road showroom to see the fabulous MISSONI INNTIL SOFA by Bendik Torvin.  We think this sofa has a very ‘Missoni look’ about it, with its dynamic, unbroken flowing design. Come on in and experience your own ‘comfort zone’ (although do check our opening times… we try very hard not to lock our lovely comfortable, sleep induced customers in!)  The image below is of the Inntil in Missoni fabric Coomba, which is a pale silver/grey glossy cord.

Also by Torvin for Missoni is the GRAVITA RANGE (so called, according to Torvin, as sitting on this furniture creates a feeling of “being pulled towards the earth’s surface” – well, we’re all for a bit of that!).

Missoni Home Furniture Gravita sofa

Then there are the beds.  Gorgeous Missoni beds.  We love the MISSONI HOME SCREEN HIGH BED with its extra high headboard.  It’s designed by the Missoni Home Studio team and, if you’re wanting a real bedroom statement piece, choose the iconic Nador fabric that you see here, with the famous multi-coloured zigzag motif. Or, if you’re looking for less bedroom excitement, choose from their plain weaves, stripes, florals or luxurious mohair velvet (or, of course, supply your own favourite).

The ADAR BED simply says ‘sleep’ to us, with its comfy deep base and slim, partitioned headboard.  The mohair velvet fabric, mentioned above, has been used in this shot of the Adar – it’s the ultimate in luxury and this wonderful, relaxing teal velvet works so well don’t you think?
